Still, the author is somewhat right. You need a microscope to be able to read that fine print that says that an internet connection is required. I sure didn't spot that fine print. [addsig]

Odd, since the US copy comes with a card that specifically states you need an internet connection and steam, with a suggested broadband connection.

Also, you need to take into consideration that the majority of people who bought the game didn't just see it sitting on the shelfs one day. They saw the E3 videos and crapped their pants. You also have to remember that there is NO advertisement for HL2 (excluding certain game magazines) outside the internet. This also suggests that the user already has an internet connection and knows about HL2.

Also, if you had any questions ... you could have visited steampowered.com and looked at the FAQ section. And the logo for steam and steampowered web address is on the package of HL2.

However, I'm not sure about European copies. [addsig]

UK had television adverts, actually

Just a beating heart style HL2 symbol. Quite naff, in reality! And it does clearly state on the back of retail copies "Internet Connection Required" - "Other: Internet Connection/DVD Drive"

Oh ... stupid US never has anything but PSolame2 and Crap-Box commercials. Sometimes they'll have the "PC" symbol too, however, they always show console gameplay ... I don't know why, since the PC version would look better. [addsig]

i think all the packaging said that an internet connection was required. the concern seems to be that valve should have made it clear that this was for much more than simply registering your copy. [addsig]

There isn't a Steam logo on my DVD-box, but it's mentioned on a small paper with installation instructions. Quite clearly actually. It also mentiones when and how off-line play is available. Not on the box, but still... it's there.

I dont think that takeing valve to court over the steam problem would work at all. I've had my share of problems but in the end steam works better than any other program even remotly like it.

It took me weeks to get BF 1942 to work.

Also I think the only who have any right to complane about the internet valification process are those who have never in their life 'stolen' a program. If valve didn't want to keep money in their pocket and pervent their game from being stolen then we wouldn't have to go through the valification process.

Steam is an amazing system and any problems are more than over shadowd by how well it works. Like all other things in the world we dont notice it untill it breaks. HL2 has run 1000 times more than it hasn't run.

If you didn't get HL2 to work and want to blame some one then blame yourself for not reserching it enough. If you didn't have internet, or had pay-as-you-go then you should look into anything that might need internet.

Steam works for me too although it really is annoying sometimes and still has lots of bugs. I was just trying to point-out how far some are willing to go, and when someone is ready to go to court for such a thing, the whole world is going to hell.

What I don't like about steam is that it does things behind you'r back, even when you tell it NOT to update.
