Have you noticed that the mad scientists in Far Cry use Windows? No wonder they couldn't handle the mutants.

Check out this computer monitor with the easily recognizable Windows "blue screen of death":

Why do the graphics look like s**t? I thought the game was better looking than that. [addsig]

When you look at a model texture close-up, that's what it looks like (in any game).

The lighting engine of FarCry is more advanced than HL2's... so is the model rendering- in fact the whole engine is. [addsig]

Once again, Myrk takes the opportunity to knock source :P No offence mate, but I'll bet you are throwing around these terms without knowing that much about the underlying tech of either.

Too bad the art direction was lousy!

But seriously, I haven't seen a BSoD in a long time. I've found Windows XP to be pretty stable.

I still get BSOD's occasionally - the difference is that in XP when you see a BSOD, it means that something is really f**ked up.

Yeah, typically when you have a hardware issue. I have had the blue screen a couple of times when I had memory compatibility problems. But it's true, the BSOD is pretty rare with XP.

...but back in the days when we had Windows ME. That's a daily occurrence.

And did anyone else notice that the indoor levels of Far Cry look monotonous, not really much better than Doom II or Quake II. And the monster models? They look atrocious. I was so surprised at how ugly the trigen models looked when I first encountered one.

The fast zombie model in HL2 and the combine models look simply gorgeous in comparison.

To demonstrate the beauty of the Far Cry outdoor scenes, I'll post a screenshot later that'll do its justice. I'm at work right now and I don't have Far Cry loaded on my office machine.

I bet my patients would get a kick if they see me playing video game in between patients.

Myrk and Campaignjunkie both seem to have it about right... Out of the box, Far Cry pushes power and tris much closer to D3 than Source, but as is the general trend HL2's art content and direction trumps it anyway. smiley

I recall someone here (as in work) mentioning it's technically illegal to include a BSOD in such a way...? I dunno, maybe that doesn't apply to non-US companies. :P [addsig]

lol, and somehow, hl2's models dont look that poor close up,

as for lighting, hl2 will be out in the front with the introduction of HDR lighting it will be beating most games today smiley

As I promised earlier, this is a better representation of the beauty of Far Cry. The game really shines in the outdoor levels.

Can you spot the fishing guy to the right of the crosshair? You can snipe him from this distance. It sure feels good to hear the crisp crack of the sniper rifle and watch his head explode through the scope.

And honestly, I am really not that violent in real life.

yea it looks nice, but hl2 has that certain feel of depth to it, feels more detailed, less smooth and perfect, rugged like real life.

Far Cry does have some amazing outdoor level graphics but it cant really match the storey or the gameplay of HL2. HL2 is just a great game except for the fact that my standards are now set extremely high. every game that i play i expect to match HL2 and it really pisses me off because i dont know if it is possible

The Far Cry editor, SandBox, comes with the game (like Hammer, it's on the same installation CD as the game itself).

That said, the editor sucks horse fecal matter. It's unnecessarily complex, and it lacks the versatility of Hammer. Most maps come out of the editor looking pretty much the same. I haven't met a single gamer who likes the editor.

It reminds me of Bryce (if any of you have used that 3D editor in the past), except it's more difficult to use.

I can't agree with you more. Far Cry is still a nice shooter, but HL2 trumps FC any day, with regards to gameplay, artistic design, character development, story, dialogue (yeah, the dialogue in Far Cry is laughable, and not in the intended way), cinematography, and social/philosophical implications.

The monster models in Far Cry are so ugly that I was shocked to see a dead Trigen for the first time. It's so fake, and even a dead headcrab from HL2 is a million times more interesting than any of the corpse in Far Cry.

The only thing Far Cry surpasses HL2 is in respect to the AI. Far Cry merc AI is far superior than the HL2 Combines. They actually seem to strategies and coordinate an attack pattern when a squad is alerted. It's so smart that it's scary sometimes.
