http://sib1.od2.com/common/Framework.aspx?shid=0170002E hosts MSN, Wanadoo and a few other music download websites- it's the iTunes equivalent for Windows Media Player, though I couldn't tell you if they only run in that program on the same PC (like with f**king iTunes ). It's a fairly limited selection, but only 69p/song, or 1p to stream it.

*edit* it would appear that the BigNoiseMusic link above is the same site, but they charge more since 10% of proceeds go to Oxfam.

And there's obviously http://www.napster.co.uk, too.

There is actually a simple way to get around limits on iTunes files (and legally I think - iTunes suggests that you do this if you want to use the music on another PC!):
1) Burn the track(s) to a CD-RW using iTunes. Note that it's RW, not R
2) Rip again to an MP3 or something
3) Wipe the CD-RW

Admins - delete this post if I really shouldn't be posting it, but I'm pretty sure it's legit.

Legal stuff:
Downloading music/movies is illegal (in the USA at least) anytime/anywhere, the only time its legal is if your paying (iTunes) or you've won the pepsi cap contest (once again iTunes).
illegal:
I would use Limewire (right now its not working for me), or bit torrent for movie files/music files, really great program actually, got me the full season of Full Metal Alchemist smiley.

Actually Downloading songs is NOT illegal. Sharing them is. That is why i am a bastard and don't share! Actually, to get songs, go to www.dogpile.com and use the audio search, then specify what format in the advanced search options. It takes a bit of getting used to how the engine works, but if you need a song in a pinch, this works okay. [addsig]

LOL. well really, there is no effective way to track who downloads them, and lots of technicalities (partial downloads, etc) but you've either got the file shared or you don't. So they wanted to kill many birsd with one stone. Take down ONE sharer, and stop hundreds of downloaders.

Maybe I'm wrong but I always thought that if you were caught with downloaded music and movies on your computer (even if you weren't sharing them), you were up the proverbial creek. Obviously it would be harder to get caught if you didn't share, but I still thought you'd get in trouble just for having them.

perhaps you have not been here long enough to know. i do not believe in software/music pirating. it's mine, i bought it, and i will allow anyone i wish to have it. i assume other see it the same way so...

i buy, far more than i borrow, so my conscience is spotlessly clear.

i do however follow my leaders rules so.... i rarely post things about *taboo* items here.

at last count, my *taboo* list of movies is near 300 i think smiley

Remember folks, I am posting these links so you can find media you ALREADY OWN!

Shareaza is a great free p2p that gets you maximum results but your transfers may take awhile to start, or not at all. Can search multiple items at once. BitTorrent handler. Looks pretty. There are no bogus music files on Shareaza because it filters them.

Kazaa Lite Revolution 2.6 is similar to Shareaza except a couple of years older and doesn't look as pretty. you will probably get more successful downloads AND faster than Shareaza with this, but the bogus music files DON'T get filtered even with the 'filter bogus files' option on, which may mean finding popular new songs may take a bit of effort. The link is to the file on my site becuase I dunno where you can even get this version anymore...tough to find.

Mininova.org is a website where you can download tons of movies (you already own of course) and all sorts of program images. Requires Shareaza or similar BitTorrent handler to download files.

Gran faro's website has 622 music videos you can download right on the homepage...browse it if you're bored .

Haha. Oh if only that were true.

I was surprised to learn some of the inner workings of copyrights and how little rights you have to material even when you buy them. They're like EULAs.
You're basically "right", though, you probably wont get busted if you don't share what you download because you're not "spreading" the "problem" past yourself.

A lot of it is still being debated because production studios and labels are yelling that they want all the money they're "losing" (when you think about it, they really aren't, because they're going on the assumption that you'd buy the product if you hadn't of downloaded it ... which is most times not true. It's the same way Microsoft just assumes anyone not using windows is a "capital loss")
It really has nothing to do with intellectual property. Most artists don't care and most filmmakers just ask that you don't release it before the movie has been premiered. [addsig]

iTunes is currently under investigation by the EC for charging us UK users more/song than Europeans, apparently And someone else has taken them to court, because the songs you download can only be played on an iPod and no other portable player...

I hate iTunes. it's like spyware that comes with Quicktime. It just runs in the background and uses resources there's not much that bugs me more...

me hates iTunes too, i got an iPod mini (which works fine and blah blah blah) but its damn annoying that the only way to browse it is through iTunes, you cant just play the files in winamp direectly from the iPod, and because my dad wont allow me to have music downloaded from the internet (legally but he wont "accept" that) on my pc the only way to play the files is with iTunes, the only good thing about iTunes is that you can dock it in the processline.
