I would go with a GeForce 5850 if you can afford it. You wouldn't need an upgrade for some time and it is pretty cheep now.

I'm pretty happy with my fx5200. The only problem is that nvidia are mongo-bitches when it comes to this card's driver.

The card he currently has should play HL2 and CSS on high detail. (Obviously, it won't show the DX9 effects, but you get the idea) [addsig]

i got a fx5200 and it runs perfect on high model, shader, and texture detail with reflect all on water at 1024x786 on dx9 with pretty good fps.
i go with that one, its pretty cheap and hasnt let me down!

I'm sure it -looks- great, but I doubt you are getting a good framerate. My 5700le 256 choked on high shader detail in HL2, and I know my system (P4 3.47ghz, 1GB ram) wasn't the bottleneck. Did you just say 'reflect all' on water, too?! You must be used to getting 10-20 fps I guess?!

whoops my mistake, i think that the shader detail is acutally on low![]()
but everything else is as it says. ill have to recheck my framerate when i get my steam up and running again

My 9800 Pro 256 runs so well, I cannot really imagine better. I know it exists fundamentally, but I played HL1 on such a crappy machine for so long that the 9800 looks like heaven incarnate.
I may upgrade to a bigger card eventually, but for now, I wouldn't recommend anything more expensive unless you just have the money to blow. A 9800 is pretty inexpensive by any standard when you compare prices vs. results.
