Ok so I need some computer help. My Windows Media Player won't play AVIs. I need another program that will or I need the proper codec that will allow Windows Media Player to play the AVIs. Also I can't figure out what version my Windows Media Player is. I've checked the folder but don't see anything about it being either version 9 or 10. [addsig]

I tried Winamp and it does the same thing as WMP. It plays the audio portion of the AVI but no video shows up. [addsig]

First off, WMP 9 and 10 are terrible.

Secondly, you're not having trouble playing "AVI" you're having trouble playing DiVX. (They just decided to use the avi extension, don't be fooled)

(I'd personally suggest Media Player Classic to play videos, it's not bloated and doesn't save information for a census)

go here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm

I'd suggest getting this pack, simply because support for all these formats would pretty much play anything you'd ever want.
But, if you want to browse the sight: http://www.free-codecs.com/

Don't get the official Divx stuff it goes hand in hand with a player and Gator Adware (which I found actually downloads other Adware for you. Fun.)

Also, the reason why it wont play in WinAmp either is because you're missing the codec entirly. No player on your computer will play it if it doesn't know how to decode it. [addsig]

I'd use MPC too. The only problem I've had with it has been when using two screens.

The official DivX codec can be installed without spyware, but you have to be - very - careful during installation.

Thanks for the link to the codecs Crono. I got them and I can watch the video now. I need it to work so I could watch the Wolf's Rain episodes I downloaded. Damn good show too. [addsig]

I know this was probably brought up already as I didn't read this through. Players seldom fail because of the player itself, it is almost always the codecs involved. Use the newest, best codecs you can find.

also, most of you know my viewing habits when it comes to *taboo* acquisitions. My all time favorite viewer is still the ViPlay. It has everything anyone could want or need for quality AVI playback.

I think of it as the XAT program of movie viewing, its that good.
