ok, I want to give this another go. Last time I tried honestly no one (well almost) did any work and we just fell apart. I wasn't a strong member of the community yet and didn't search out much support.

for you who dont know, I want to get the community together and come up with one map from several mappers. We will map for HL2:DM and each person will make a room (or two) and we will stich them all together into one single map. Each person will be free to map what they want so as you play the map you will constanly be moving from one strange area to another. One minute your fighting in a lab and the next minute you jump down a hole onto the roof of a combine tower.

so, here is the neat little catch phrase some one came up with:

12 mappers
7 countries
4 timezones
1 map

how will it work?

Once you sign on and state what size room you would like to work on I will make a vmf file with each room laid out and attached to every member's name through VIS grouping. So all the mapper has to do is hide all but his own VIS group to see his part of the level. This way if the mapper needs a little more space he can see if there is any room between him and the person next to him.

The room lay-out will consist of a large box and 2-4 gateways that lead to the next area. You as the mapper will work inside this box. The mapper will block VIS from the gateway to increase performance, basically the player should not be able to see into other sections unless they are near the gateway.

Everyone will have creative freedom, if you want to have a combine locker room do it! If you want your map to be a castle, go for it! If you want your section to be the inside of a shoe then have it your way! The only limitation is props (we have to split them up through out the maps but that shouldn't be a problem) and each map must use its gateways. Also, I do not think there will be a skybox, but it would be possible.

I'd love to see everyone work on this, it wont take much of your time and it will be fun. I made my map section in one night, and the sections are not very big. I'm not looking for expert mappers, just people who will put in the time to do it.

In the next few days I'm going to put up a small page on my website and (maybe) set up my forums. If you are interested post here and e-mail me at Drglass@docglass.net

I haven't had an ounce of real "free time" since Summer 2003. Except for a brief week or so in 2004. That was fun.

Otherwise, I'd say, "sure". As there are no restrictions past optimization and respecting other mappers work. [addsig]

I've never participated in something like this, but it sounds like a lot of fun. I'm willing to commit to it so sign me up Doc!

Good to see you took the initiative on this. I remember reading a thread of the first attempt where the map apparently eventually got lost... and I wanted to be able to contribute to something like that.

I don't know about this, I was never really for it in the first place, I mean it limits the mapper to the creativeness of connections, gameplay, and all around style of the map.

what if someone watnts a night skybox, but another wants a daytime one?

The multiple vis "boxes" can potentially become a problem for vis to compile (sky boxes).

Those are my thoughts.

If there should ever be a comunity project I would think it would be where someone starts the map (limit to 500-1000 brushes 100-150 models), then pass it on to the next person, with a limit of 500-1000 brushes 100-150 models etc. etc. That way people can feed off of eveyone's work and add to it. That me-thinks would be more fun, logical, and hold artistic design.

I participated the last time, but I failed to get something up in time. My excuses, Doc.

I don't have a lot of free time now, so I can't participate again.

I was part of the last one, and was saddened to find out that the map never came about.. I had worked really hard on my lava/metal work area. It was my best work at the time. And it was lost to a project that never came to be.

I would be willing to help out, but I am about to hook up with Morphine and you I thought and do the Thunder Project.

That does sound like fun omega, but there are alot of problems with something like that (I would suspect)

This isn't at all my idea, they did a few of these over at the VERC and they were quite cool.

I dont think the map would really be a great mp map becuase, yes, the layout will suck. But it will be a crazy mix of diffrent map ideas and consepts. Not to mention it really wouldn't take more than a day or so.

I might remind you all that even when these things fall apart, the participants generally learn a s**tload about mapping.

Spit1 was a vast success, even though the map is still in limbo. if you doubt what multiple mappers can accomplish, i can show you "Spit"

Well, I think it'd be awesome. A map where every room is different would be sweet. It is way better than having the whole map just being one boring "theme". I would love to join....but I am too busy working on my own mod . Need to put all of my ideas into that. However, I would love to play it if it ever completes, as it seems like a really good idea.smiley [addsig]

Yeah its not a new idea, just something that never seems to get done.

I think what I'll do it sent out templates to anyone who wants one and as those people complete them I will stich them together. So first relese will have 3 rooms, then the next will have 5 rooms, etc etc.

I would love to join such a thing as long as you don't have to work your a$$ off making your contribution to the project . Overall, I love the idea and i've heard that such a thing had been attempted in the past in other mapping communities and, despite some minor irritations, everything turned-out great. But I suggest electing a coordinator (note the fact that I avoided the world leader) who should simply say things like "Ok, we need an underground storage area. Anyone up for it?".

Well I think the whole premise is that no one should tell anyone else what they should be making. So you can walk from a lava pit into a tiny bit of canyon from the ice age to a kitchen to a scrapyard... etc.

It's like an exercise in surrealism.

Right, I want it to be kinda like the "chase" in 'being john Malkavitch' (sp?)

I will be doing the 'admin' work, basicaly giving everyone their template then puting all the maps together once they are done.

What do you mean? Like a piece of corridor from the main map so that we know how to connect our bit to the mothermap easier?

Andrei I think this is what he was referring to when he said template.
