Example of console vs PC prices...

x-box 360 has 3 3.2g CPUs...

the x-box 360 will sell for ~$300 (IIRC)

to buy those same CPUs for a PC, it'll cost around $750...

Processors are more than their clock speed, and don't forget that this thing isn't out yet- when you get a hold of one of these things next year, 1mb of L2 cache in a 3ghz chip won't be state of the art, or cost a vast amount.

That is true... consoles are generally more streamlines and so those cpus are probably alot cheaper to make than the average PC CPU... but honestly, they both get outdated... consoles when console v2 comes out, PCs... do I need to explain PCs? :P

The Xbox360 looks really feature packed and the PS3 supremely powerful, so I'll be getting these two for sure.

After having been burnt with the Gamecube, I'll wait to see how well the Revolution is supported first by other game developers and how many decent games are available for it.

The backwards compatibility isn't really a big draw for me tbh as I'll likely still have the previous consoles anyway.

Orph, it's not really a case of keeping up with the Joneses - there are plenty of great console games around. I too couldn't see the appeal with consoles games up to a few years ago, but there are areas in which consoles out do PCs. Sure, PCs rule the roost when it comes to the likes of massively multiplayer onlines games and first person shooters, but for genres such as multiplayer sports and fighting games the consoles wipe the floor with PC games tbh.

I wouldn't get caught dead with either of these two genre's, so mayhap theres a reason I don't have the console appeal. :/

My likes: RPG,RTS,FPS,and TBS,, thats about it. I see no comparisons to console beating out the PC for these genre's.

I have several hundred bucks invested in my PC's. I have most all of the older consoles, for the kids, but if they want newer, they will be buying them not i.

Dreamcast,Nintendo,Sega,Xbox,Gamecube to mention a few.

I find that both consoles and PCs have great RPGS...

I can't stand FPS on a console, same goes for RTS

Those are the three major gametypes I play...

The almighty platformer crown will probably never be wrestled from the consoles. I even just bought a controller for my PC for some Psychonauts action (I'll probably eventually go uber-geek and get multiple versions of this one, as with BG&E, it's that good. :P ). I'll probably also start using said controller for KOTOR (gotta finish up that dark side path) and BG&E PC, which I haven't finished yet.

When you look at stuff like Psychonauts, BG&E, Prince of Persia, Jak, Ratchet, Sly Cooper, Viewtiful Joe, etc. etc.... PC would never do. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

One of the best things about PS2 when it came out is that you could play all your old PS games. Thats a gigantic benefit, considering that if you already are paying 300 for a console, and games are 50, really how many games can you buy before breaking the bank? But being able to play your old games still means you don't have to buy enough games that you won't get bored. IMO PS has better games than xbox. If I were to get a console (which I'm not) it'd be PS 3.

Well I'm glad the PS3 is being made because imagine the huge battles in Zone of the Ender :O
It lagged on a PS2 because it used the PS2's power to its fullest!
The size and speed was amazing for a PS2 to handle so imagine Zone of the Ender 3 on a PS3 :O
The battles could last for hours and your eyes would hurt at the speed your mech flies around oooooooo!

Please konami make no. 3 !!

a combined power of 9.6ghz is quite a leap from 750mhz... a bit unbelievable i have to say but i wouldnt know.
i dont like consoles (the only games i ever played were all the GTAs and Halo 2) but the xbox 360 seems the most promising

Wasn't that just used in the Xbox 360 development kits, since nothing else at the time was powerful enough? The 360 uses three 3.2Ghz CPU's that each run 2 threads, while the PS3 uses the new "Cell" processor that Sony codesigned with IBM and Toshiba (it has lots of processing cores - 7 are used on the PS3). Suffice to say both of these are pretty damn powerful - the 360 has over 1 terraflop of raw processing power in total, while the PS3 has almost 2 terraflops. Thats much higher than current top of the range consumer PC's.

Yeah, in RTS and FPS games the console joypads simply can't replicate the precision and speed of a mouse, or the number of buttons to do specific tasks that the keyboard provides.

There are some extremely good console RPGs though, and even the GBA has some great Turn-Based-Strategy games (Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are two examples).

TBS games are getting pretty popular, particularly those from Nippon Ichi. You only need look at all the Japanese ones that are coming out on PS2 - Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Dynasty Tactics, Front Mission 4 (PLEEEEEASE come out in the UK!), Atelier Iris, Stella Deus... Seems to be more of them on the consoles than on the PC these days to be honest.

First off, I am not all that militant, so I don't need to be appeased.

I've never owned a console, for one major reason. I've only enjoyed playing FPS games, and everytime I ventured out of the genre, I was disappointed. I am sure there are non-shooter games out there that I'll enjoy, but they're hard to find.

As a result, I'll probably never buy a console. Besides, a computer is much more versatile than a console. I can actually use it for other purposes than gaming and watching movies.

That said, I would buy the PS3 if I ever end up with a console. I don't own any cnosole games now, so backward compatibility doesn't offer any incentive for me. The graphics for PS3 kicks everyone's ass, and I actually like the sleek design of the box.

As a gamer I'd have to go with the PS3 and the Rev for its backwards compatibility. As a developer, all three are fricken awesome. PS3 with it's new technology and using OpenGL(I love them for that), 360 with the DirectX API and various features, and the Rev...well I haven't checked out the Rev's development capabilities yet. As a sidenote, the demos of each of the consoles was done with older development kits that in no way show the real power of the system. Hell even with the PS3 on the way, Sony is still supporting the PS2 till 2010 simply because its architecture is still showing a great deal of life in it and developers are still trying to find out what they can do with it. Four 300MHz, 128bit processors all working asynchonosly, working in harmony is still pretty damn cool.

I will probably buy a PS3. I think PS3 will win again, but perhaps not by as much as the last time.

Haha orph <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

Well if I'm going to buy a consoles (which isn't a sure thing) I'd definitely go out and get the PS3. I have a PS2 and a bunch of games for both the PS1 and PS2... and so I'll get a lot out of the backwards compatability.

It's funny, I used to be a huge SEGA fan (since the genesis was my first system) and I used to hate Sony for killing off the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Eventually I broke down and bought one... and I have no regrets. I don't see the trend of Sony drawing quality games to their consoles ending any time soon.

Umm, look at both of these consoles, plus controllers, and then decide...
