So I restored to my previous checkpoint with Windows and do without the latest driver. I also had to turn off the Steam warning.
Lesson learned: it's better not to update any driver unless something actually isn't working right.

Run "msconfig" and turn all that crap off.. I advise to always use the newest drivers personally.. I have seen times where I regretted doing so, but that was back when ATI had poor support.
Anywho's, run msconfig and turn off all that crap thats annoying you.

No, no silly butt.. I am talking about the ATI stuff that auto-installs when you replace the drivers. not Steam related things. " SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

I played Half-Life 2 single-player and deathmatch this morning with the older driver, and everything looked fine to me. I read the release note from ATI, and there is no specific fix for Half-Life 2 or any Steam games. Most of the changes for this driver update were made for Republic Commando, which I don't play anyways.
So I'm sticking with the old driver for now. No need to upgrade unless something turns Half-Life 2 or Far Cry buggy.

But, it would be under msconfig.
Or the registry setting (Start >> Run >> regedit):
HKLM >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion >> Run
Delete the keys you want to in the right hand panel. There are msconfig settings stored in other places in the registry as well. Under:
HKLM >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Shared Tools >> MSConfig >> startupfolder [and] startupreg
contain directories underneath them which can be booted as well. You have to delete the directories holding the data though UNDER these directories.
rs6: Most drivers that come out now aren't really fixing anything, they're making things run faster. The problem is that some (most) developers don't test like they should.

That's what I thought too. But when I tried removing the files to the Recycle Bin, Explorer refused, saying that it was unable to delete them because "some files are in use".
Heck, I feel fine with the previous drivers. I'll use them unless something goes b0rk. I just feel that ATI should do a better job with their driver update process. Users shouldn't have to hunt around in the registry to fix installation bugs.
I am just thankful for the Windows XP Restoration tool. It has saved me from disaster numerous times. It even saved my machine from an intrusion of pop-up website once.

That sounds an aweful lot like a spyware program bud. You do run spybot and adaware, right?
Everything you described today, sounds more like spyware than ATI issues.

Actually thats a bad motto IMO. Generally new driver updates, whether it be for Windows XP or ATI drivers, they make the drivers more efficient, meaning your computer will run faster even if it is soo slightly.
I can never think of a time that I updated drivers and they screwed my computer up. You just need to do it correctly. When ATI means uninstall old video drivers, they mean UNINSTALL THEM! And that should be trhe general rule for all driver updates (unless its BiOS updates, which is another story).
