It's not as clear cut as saying it was clear which option people should have opted for. Some haven't got broadband so the Silver package wasn't feasible. Some haven't got big bucks to spend on the retail gold version (or wanted to pay nearly double for what was at the time only extra stuff like posters). Also people may not have actually known that DoD:S wouldn't be available to those who bought HL2 retail at a shop, or that HL1:S and HL1DM:S were even going to be created.
It's the lack of an upgrade option which is the problem now; if people now want to get HL1:S, DoD:S (when it is released) and so on, they have no option but to drop $60 on an entirely new Silver package.
It's not that people expect something for nothing - I know I'd be happy to pay $10 for an upgrade to a Silver package - but that people are angry that there is now nothing they can do to upgrade.

In the grand scheme of things, HL DM was not all that popular the first time round, once CS and others came along. I dont see why it would be any different now.
It isnt all that big a loss if you dont get to have it.

Yes, there needs to be a package upgrade but if you ask me, I would be willing to pay another $60 for HL1, HL1:S, HL1:DM, HL1:DMS, DoD, DoD:S, OF, TFC, TF2, CS, CZ, CS:S, DMclassic, and Ricochet...
If you got all those at retail price thats something like... $200?

number of people out (non-brodband who didn't have the extra money for
gold). Its tough but I dont think the silver deal would have been
a possiblity for retail, you would need tons of CDs for all the games
you get, plus what would valve do when new games came out? mail
them to you?

The retail copies just came with the GCF files. And in all actuality all that mattered was the KEY.

HL2DM would have been so great if it hadn't had all of those annoying glitches.
