"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
When Neil stepped out onto the moon (or the hollywood set), he meant to say "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The missing article makes the use of "man" and "mankind" synonymous, rendering the parallel structure pointless and the quote itself redundant.
You know what surprises me most? That the myth of the Hollywood landing still persists. We all live in a world that advances faster than a childs shoe size and still many cannot accept that we landed on the moon. An object just over a lousy quarter million miles away.
Sadly, I feel sorry for them, but... *shrugs*

no-one here said we didnt land on the moon. there's a difference with not having the footage thus recreating it in a studio

I was speaking in generalities bud. Remember, I am from the last generation.. The one that saw the event on TV, I still meet people my age who scoff at the notion.
I never meant to say that Snarkpit members said it.

that whole week is one of my dearest and fondest memories.....my dad, (rest his soul) and i watched damn near every minute of coverage glued to the tube.....great and heady times they were.....woot!

Well, you never did reach the moon after miserably failing several times and killing astronauts during failed launch-attempts. Not being able to bear the thought of the soviets beating you to the moon (which would have had a great propagandistic impact for the soviets, prooving the victory of communist ingenuity and all that crap, and America would have been shoved aside in the race for space), you made a fake landing in a studio. Ok, i'm not really a supporter of this theory but I must say that those who are have bought some pretty convincing evidence to back-up their theory.
if that part of the statement which i have "reddened" had not also been in what i percieve as a "semi-sarcastic color", i may have had an inspirationally abrasive retort....i especially enjoyed the freudian slip using the term "bought" ......//shrugs....
