I don't wanna sound negative, but I don't think pirates vs ninja is such a great idea: they come from two incompatible worlds... (pirates as in pirates of the carribean?). I was thinking more about a sci fi mod, with giant antlions or something like that; maybe with an obscure touch, more violent and bloody...
Well, whatever is the theme, I think I can help u with the design of weapons, costumes, aliens, architectures, etc...

I personally wouldn't join, since I haven't HL2, nor am I a
particularly competent mapper. At a push, however, I probably could do
conceptual art for modelling around, and perhaps as a (again
conceptually) puzzle designer (a much overlooked feature of games).
However I'm pleased to see that Quaver has the maturity to leave the
role of project manager open for other people, since its normally "I
have this great idea for a mod, everyone else make it to my
specification and ill be the manager"
Organisation-wise if experienced mappers were do deal with the main
architecture, and then passed their portion of the project on to
several newbies for texture alignment, dirtying it up, etc (the
equivelent of the Korean workers who do the in between frames in
cartoon cells etc.
). it could work quite well.
However, I'm notoriously unreliable for informal things, so unless its a serious organised project with deadlines etc. I won't throw my hat in the ring.

Pirates vs Ninjas? That's the crappiest idea i've heard yet! How could
I have missed it? And why the hell do we need a story? Look at
counter-strike -- It's one of the most popular mods in the world and it
lacks any storyline. When I go online to play something, I don't give a
rat's ass about storyline; I want RPGs, blood, gore and explosions.

i love pirates vs ninjas but NOT in a hl2 mod, think about it, how
would it look, ninjas jumping around and throwing shurikens at pirates
out on the big sea.
its true that this is funny in a flash movie or comic, but i dont think
it will turn out to be a very action packed or funny gameplay.

Ok, instead of pirates vs ninjas, how about like its a space themed
kinda thing. Where theres the humans and the aliens. The aliens would
have to be creative though. and maps would range from space stations,
to alien planets. We could f**k with the physics alot too. Outer space
would be fun to play in.
It would be nice if the aliens had didffernt guns then the humans too.
Humans have like grappling hooks, pistols, bazookas (oh jeez), sniper
rifles. Aliens could have laser guns, plasma rifles, and plasma
grenades (halo 2 style).
Either that or something that invlves the ghetto or the mafia. if we
went with the ghetto we could have like two differnt gangs as teams.
Instead of like the regular sounds like "follow me" and "go, go, go" it
could be like "Yo, geet ova here" and "git your punk ass ova there!".
thatd be interesting.
The mafia one would be hard to pull off, the mafia has no one to fight...
But back to the alien vs human idea, thatd be awesome if the humans had
jet packs and the aliens had mega jump powers. Id like to see someone
make a alien army base, how they would design it.
Let me know if those ideas are crap or good. I have more...

While the humans vs aliens thing is fairly unoriginal (AVP, natural
selection, Hostile Waters, Incoming, Duke Nukem - all of them - and many many more), the Mafia theme sounds like an
interesting idea but, like you said, the mafia theme has limitations.
Perhaps the russian mafia (molotovs, mosin nagants etc) vs the italian
mafia (tommy guns, colts etc)?

Im the only one so far to vote "Other[sound/website/project manager]".
Mainly because i am a realy crap mapper and it would be like having a
great map, and then all a sudden you walk into a killbox.
Not brilliant i would say, im ok at sound can edit kind off and do
minor things, as for project manager (lol im 15, that awnsers it for
you). Website i am very basic, although i do know a good website mate
but i think that Lep is probably more suited to that.
Also noticed no one has voted for coding, maybe we dont have any or they arnt voting/reading.

A while ago I suggested remaking HL1DM for HL2, and I still think we should even though valve are making it. It would be easy to make, you can use alot of content from HL1 and up the polys and pixels (which isn't hard) and we wouldn't have to pay for it. My current understanding is that only silver and gold members of steam can get HL1DM for source.

hehe idd.
On the issue of SP vs MP. MP has a far longer lifespan and gets more ppl to play then SP.
i think a more relevant question is COOP vs DM.
so far no-one has opposed conc-jumps, i like that too. Yet that would mean that it would have to be fast-paced, hence quasi excluding the maffia theme.

I think we should create my hi tech future assassin mod, a semi 1st and 3rd person RPG, where you customize your character using a huge set of different pieces... I like games where you feel more individual rather than just a clone. If you want to know more I'll create a design document... I've explained the mod alot to people, and most people love the idea.
Just think- robots and humans, all assassins trying to either:
- Kill each other (DM)
- Kill the other race (TDM)
- Kill the target and each other (Hunted DM)
- Kill the target (Hunted with Teams)
- Plus more...

A long term RPG would be difficult to set up for MP, while a "create
your own character" type thing would slip into ye olde trap of
Slow+Power vs, quick+powerful.
Still, robots = good. IMO, RPGness, less so.

Myrk have you ever played the desert crisis HL1 mod? If there ever was customizable mod it is this one. You can fully customize your head and there were hundreds of combinations possible. add a lot of different-style weapons to that and the possibility to do long/high jumps (so basicly conc-jumping without the conc) speedruns,... and you have a sweet fastpaced mod. maybe this is the kind of thing you mean, and indeed its great.

All this talk of customisation and robots is reminding me of good old
Research Project: ELVA - the mod I started up ages back, couldn't
decide whether to do it for HL1 or hold off for HL2, and then ended up
putting indefinately on hold. Maybe someday, maybe someday...

I can code, BUT
1) I honestly don't have a compiler compatible with HL2 atm, so..
2) I would take forever to code (lack of time mostly)

Fjorn, 1) I can send you one
2) Can't help you with that :-P
But, you know what would be the most breaking through in all of the
Half-Life history? Have you noticed, that NONE of the MultiPlayer mods
are an online RPG! Such as Runescape (the most played one, has about
couple hundred thousand players), so that you pull around in a HUGE
world (no doubt, it if loads, then a long time, but for this you can
move around quite a lot of time) and kill some "monsters" and have a
"wilderness" where you can fight with other people and everything would
be bind to your Steam account... it would be REALLY cool. You
cannot make a server on your own, but there are server just like
Runescape has. I played it for couple of years (a long time ago) and
sometimes I help my pals out if I have a lot of spare time and pull
around for couple of hours.
This mod would be THE harderst to make, but if you actually think about
it - HL2: RuneScape (okay, the name would need remake) then... WOW! It
would be FAMOUS and it would beat every other damn mod on the internet!
We would need superb and professional coders (the project creation
itself would be easy, though) who knew a lot about C++. I am surprised
Valve hasn't yet thought about it! Afterall, you could turn it into a
free game and a members game oneday, so that Members have like umm...
more quests, more places to go, more items, more skills and stuff...
and payed like 5 bucks for this in a month... I mean, who would not
want to TRY atleast an online Source-based RPG!
To tell you the truth, if we would like it to be stand-alone, we would
also need Source license to distribute it, but if it stays as a mod...
or even if we can get Valve as an ally, the Members version would also
be even more thinkable!
I put down a long story, took me a lot of time, so respect it
