One thing I've always wanted to see implemented in an HL2 mod is an idea from Soldner - almost a compromise for RPG fans. You can fully customise your character - selecting heads, torsos, legs, and the like. It focuses more on what your character looks like than actual gameplay features. Maybe an idea...?

Also, I think sc-fi humans vs aliens would be quite tricky to do well bearing in mind that natural selection is being ported over to source.

As for Madedog's idea:

and payed like 5 bucks for this in a month
I'm really not keen on this bit. The point of a mod is that it's free, and I have a feeling that without a license from Valve this would be illegal anyway.

You mean like CS only Terrorists vs Terrorists? That would be fun . And adding some RPGness like having a selfdetonation skill or being able to drive carbombs around would be cool. Just imagine: capture the fort with carbombs . Me likes.

Okay, well, you can leave out this 5 bucks part, but overall the IDEA itself? The truth is - such thing would BE popular. And ofcourse, it sets quite a few requirements for people so it would be easy to find sponsors, since commercials somewhere in the game itself etc etc and computer manufacturers would provide hardware, since they get profit (since people need new hardware), and so would valve, since everyone who wanted to play it, would need Steam!

I doubt very much you could implement that in source, and if you could, I doubt very much it would be practical. 32 players causes a considerable amount of lag in internet play, and I imagine youd want 100+.

It's all about the netcode. If optimized enough, the lag would be minimal.

Ah geez no-one took my advice seriously!
Stop saying oh this won't work and MAKE it work! If you start now who knows what you could accomplish?

Good point, Habboi. If I was good at C++ then I would have already begun, but... what's not is not...

How about this, lets combine the RPG and FPS elements. The RPG would be like the world you run around in. And buy your guns in and stuff. Customize your character and stuff. Then while your running around your join Squad Teams, a squad team is like a clan. Except it would be official and we could make a ranking system. Then when two Squads meet up they can get in a FPS, CS battle. The winner goes up in rank and gets a sum of money. And like I said with the money, you can barter items like weapons, or go to a shop and buy them. So you get the money and you go up in rank.

And the higher your rank is most likely the more people will repesct you. We could also alow people to use modeling programs and import their own weapons and items. It might make an unfair advantage to some people, but not many can model and make working guns.

I hope this idea is ok

Doesn't sound too bad, but by the sounds of things when squads aren't fighting, no guns. This means the architecture and the like will have to be exceptional, (which, of course, I'm sure can be managed at the Pit <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">) so that people don't get bored just running around trying to find squads. Sorry for constantly finding problems in things!

Thats not a problem at all, Pit mappers are good. Why would we want to keep the level design poor looking anayway?

I'm sorry to say this but don't get your hopes up. Without atleast 1 coder this mod will be nothing more than a map pack.

Methought Crono had some programing knowledge :o

I don't know if I would sign up. I'm currently making my own "moddish" thingy called Classic2, and I'm doing animation, bone work, mapping, texture converting, and a smidge of polygon work, by myself :o

/edit: And skinning.

/edit edit: And soundwork, and editing music quality. O_o

So I'm flanked.

That's not my point. There's a difference between good maps and stunning maps. In order to pull off something like that the maps would have to breath-taking - not just impressive. As soon as you limit gameplay like that you have to replace it with something else.

I'll map and model some basic props. I won't be able to skin them unfortunately

Why would it have to be so amazing... Most of the time you will be playing the FPS type of thing. Unless you have no friends, no one likes you and you suck. Then we also would have to include some things for the RPG element, such as chests with clothing, special guns, etc. If we had half RPG and half (life) FPS, then the RPG element would take care of the running around aimlessly. I'm sure we could think of a main thing to entertain yourself witht the RPG time.

maybe, if a coder here would accept(?), he can ask advice on how to do that from the dc dev member that implemented that (lplasma, Ikkyo ?).

so thats a bit like the total war concept (except not turn-based). Where you have strategy there during the non-battle time, you won't have anything like that here. i doubt that architecture alone will keep them interested for a long time

Reality Check: This is an FPS engine, not an RPG engine

With some coding we COULD make a decent single player RPG, but a MMORPG? naw

hell, to be honest, you could make an RPG right now without any coding, its mostly in the mapping

Quite funny how the best things of what you guys came up with then are already features I had planned for my mod (which will probably never exist).

It was mainly concentrating on old skool gameplay with huge customization, futuristic weapons and old style ones, and also some new twists...

The assassins would be decent ones, I'm not talking specialists, I'm talking super fast paced giant jumping, wall crawling assassins with cloaking devices and everything, but of course every tool and weapon has a consequence, which I did work out. The player customization tool would use something similar to "fatboy" from Unreal engine to customize body size and build etc, and a vast array of different pieces can be put together to create huge variation in the characters. Also with steam updates new models could be authed by the dev team to be used ingame, so the variation just keeps increasing!

I'll write a big dev document with pics and everything, usually takes me about an hour in IRC to explain it.

I've had an interesting idea for a mod... I guess the best way to explain it would be battlefield in space. 2 teams, objective based. The main thing is the setting. You could have each team starting on a huge battle cruiser, fighting for control over some sort of alien wreck. You have people manning the cruiser guns, fighters for air cover, dropships or jetpacks to land on the alien wreck, the list goes on. You could have pressurised/unpressurised areas, and if youre not in a pressurised area, if you get shot you have to patch your suit or die. Theres a lot that could be incorporated into this, I think it would be awesome... but what do you guys think?

it's not like you're not about to say that all the worst ideas were ones that you had planned too, are you? :P

you only think that they're the best because you don't have the vision needed to see that pirates v's ninjas could be the best thing since melted mars bars on digestive biscuits.
