Does anyone know of a program (that's free) that will allow me to extract the sound from an AVI or any other video file?

http://www.doom9.org/ <-- Everything you ever need to know about digital media. There's tons of free tools there that can perform that kind of operation.

I was looking at the AVI editing tools on doom9.net and I'm not sure exactly which one I need. I think the tool I need is Gspot 2.21 but like I said I'm not exactly sure.

Edit: I also have another computer question. I checked the information on my graphics card and it says it supports Dx9 or better. Yet when I play HL2 it runs in Dx8. How do I get it to run in Dx9?

Why not get a normal sound editor like Audacity or Sound edit PRO (the first of the two is free, the second has a trial period but you can cr**k it). You can edit most soundfiles known to man and you can easily extract the sound from avi's by playing the avi with the record function on ( which actually works since as far as I know avi soundtracks are encoded so that you can't extract them even with animation shop :P ) .

Ok, say you would like to rip the sound from a 1.5 h movie. If you managed to get a tool witch saves the sound to HD while recording (so the computer wont crash after 2 minutes when all your RAM is eaten up..). It's still 1.5 hours... why 1.5 hours on a c****ed tool when a free tool can do it in 5 minutes? :P

I don't think Gspot is what you need. As far as i now (one year ago..) gspot is a tool witch views rendering information about avi movies. Look on!

Change the startup parameters in steam to -dxlevel 90, that should do the trick. I woudn't recomend it though since i knew my card supported DX9 to. But when i changed, my FPS dropped to one quarter with the same settings.

Oh, I thought he needed small portions of sound. After all, what the heck can one do with 1.5 hrs of movie soundtrack?

Actually the sound I need to extract is from a show so it's only about 20 minutes.

Edit: As for the Dx level I tried changing that before in HL2. In the video settings in HL2 it says the hardware level is Dx8 and the Software level is Dx9. I won't let me change either one.

Virtualdub is what you need.

Ok thanks.

Edit: I went ahead and just used the record function on Creative Mediasource Player. It's a great program and kicks Windows Media Player's ass. I use it for viewing all my videos and music.

I have to do the same thing, but with a .asf and a .wmv, but Virtualdub doesn't support those file formats. Any ideas?

In that case, I would use StoikConvert to convert those vids to a format Virtualdub can handle.

StoikConvert is free, get it here http://www.stoik.com/downloads/downloads_frm.htm (bottom of the page)

Thanks, one other question. Is there a way to capture audio from a streaming file?

Googled for it, you can capture ASF video with specific programs, then convert it to AVI, load it up in Virtualdub and extract the sound.

http://emoney.al.ru/capture-streaming-video-and-audio/faq-record-asf-stream.htm

OR

you can use a sound recorder of some sort to record whilst playing the movie.
