Hey guys,

I've seen plenty of maps with and without easter eggs. Do y'all think it's cool to put em in, or do you think they're pretty lame? Or does it matter what the easter egg actually is or says?

I put an easter egg in every map I make. I like to thank people that have advised me. I also like to hide stuff in my map, that certain people will know what it is, and others will have no clue.

My latest is, a modeler is making me a easter egg.. I plan on hiding a couple in my maps..

My wife hid giant lego men we made for Lego Dust. Someone snagged her map and changed it and removed them though and her sexy picture that said map made by Reign.

So I guess I think they should be included..

I don't know what you qualify as Easter Eggs and what's just hidden goodies in the maps. I always hide things (batteries, healthkits) in hard-to-find places in the map. I don't consider them Easter Eggs though.

I hid a Magnum in my Justice map, but no one ever found it.

Since I am a CounterStrike mapper more so than any other type.. I would not consider stuff like that Easter eggs satch..

I used to restrict AWP's in my maps but hide one every now and then in a wierd place.. normally some place that was near impossible to get to or was out in the wide open.

It's a good thing that not too many people put easter-yeggs in their maps. That's what makes easter-eggs special, you see. I don't always put them in my maps , tho. On the other hand, you won't find an Andrei map without a special gadget in it (be it a howitzer or a special trap).

No, no, no. I mean a room you can't get to that has a picture of your three-legged puppy with "L337 DAWG" written on it. Or something. Why did I think of that?

Anyone who wants to see extravagance in easter eggs, check out my map cs_apartments (original CS <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_eek.gif">)... See if you can find it before you try and cheat to get to it! Made everything in the easter egg myself too, and see if you know what the original inspiration was :P

I've never really done them to be honest, but its something I would consider doing. I think, as Andrei said, that having them in every level (particularly if the easter eggs are pretty much the same each time) is a bit pointless and removes the novelty. On the other hand, I have seen them done very impressively in the past. Two that spring to mind are CJ's paintings in "Persian Letters" (an easter egg of sorts), and Gonnas had a neat little room you had to noclip into in his map "Blind Apathy". So yeah, if done well they are cool, but unless I really had a good idea of how to integrate it into the map in a neat and novel way, I don't bother.

There's always the infamous Megg in the original Halo. Now that was an extremly fun one to get too. Also, if any of you have played the myst series, those games are loaded with amazing easter eggs that you'd never find with someone telling you where they were.

It's not about mapping, but I thought the fly simulator-egg in Excel 97 was pretty cool.

Ah I remember a cs 1.6 map I made for fun which had a wall tied illusion. It led to a room with the best weapons and some gimmicks like buttons that made the towers bridges fall.

Hmm gives me an idea for a future map :P

I spent many years playing CS from beta six through to CS:S and one thing I always remember from maps are the easter eggs. It's almost a little peak into the mappers minds. I'm saddened that there aren't any hidden rooms in the CS:S official maps.

Some of the good ones that come to mind...

The picture of the guy chugging windex in cs_estate
The secret room with rats worshipping a skull in poor_yurick's as_forest
A picture of DaveJ eating smarties inside a box in one of the old versions of dust
The room with a guy having sex with a sheep in cs_italy

But my favorite is the breakable wall that reveals a picture of a hampster labeled simply "f e a r" in the 1.6 cs_office

So yes, I think secret rooms are awesome... and definitely should be included.

i remember the first great easter egg i ever encountered was in duke nukem 3d, in a canyon level there was a secret cave with a guy impaled (or hanging from a rope, dunno), and duke says "We meet again, doctor Jones"

Duke3D had heaps of easter eggs and cameos.

4 references to Star Trek (a cheat code "DNSCOTTY", two levels "Warp Factor" and "Tiberius Station", and a song "ITSGREEN.VOC")
1 reference to Indiana Jones (impaled on a cave wall in "Hotel Hell")
1 reference to Luke Skywalker (hanging from a cieling in "Lunar Reactor")
1 reference to The Terminator (a building in "Freeway")
1 reference to Tim Sweeny (a sign that says "Sweeny and Co. Sewage Experts")
1 reference to Balls of Steel (pinball machine in "Hollywood Hollocaust")
1 reference to Duke Nukem II (video game cabinet in "Hollywood Hollocaust")
1 reference to DooM (corpse in "Death Row")
several signs that say "You're not suppossed to be here - Levelord" in the Levelord's levels.

Probably heaps more I forgot to mention.
