Apparently John Carmack said that the source of Q3 will be released while giving the keynote speech of QuakeCon 2005. It was slated to be released much earlier, but a licensing deal with some other company had to be completed before it was released.

The video is here. I haven't seen it yet (~280MB), but it should have confirmation of the news.

Since the Q1 and Q2 code were GPLed, I'm guessing the Q3 code will be GPLed as well. There's this stuff and more at a thread up at slashdot.

I can't find a text of the speech anywhere, so if anyoone does, post it up please.

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/source/Q3A_TA_GameSource_127.exe

I'm very interested in seeing the stuff derived from this that gets incorporated into HL/HL2

that's regular game source, not engine source. Also, I don't see how Q3 engine source will benefit HL/HL2 projects...? The only useful stuff would require an engine license to poke around with. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Well, it's still good that they release it, is it not?

GAH! Someone gave me that link and I scooped it up and posted it here thinking it was the actual engine source. Sorry about that.

Engine license? I don't understand. I got the impression from the speech that the entire engine source is being released (like it was for Q1 and Q2). Did I get something wrong?

You were talking about HL and HL2 stuff, though. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> Q3 engine will be open-source, yes, but unless someone's licensing Source there's not much of anything people can do with that level of code... and even then, I doubt much of it would be useful and it'd make a mess of the GPL license! :P

I was thinking about parts of the AI code. I dont know about HL2, but the HL1 SDK definitely allowed modders to tinker with the AI. I'm guessing that there will be a lot of other such sections.

Anyway, it has actually been released now. Available from:
DemonFTP
FilePlanet
Fileshack
Or the torrent from FileRush

Don't know why I'm so interested TBH. It's not like I can personally do anything useful with it <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

Even if one were licensing the Source engine, you still couldn't incroporate any Q3 code, since I highly doubt the source licensing permits one to distribute the engine under GPL.

To get something to work, sometimes you just have to beat your head against the wall longer; the skin grows back, but the brick doesn't.

Source hates soup!

Yes, it is GPL'ed.
