I still don't truly understand what emo is, but I know it has something to do with Dashboard Confessional.

Emo people tend to dress in a dark, almost gothic way. Only they buy there "unique" clothes from places like hot topic. They tend to be depressed about how hard they upper middle class life is, even though they have 2 wonderfull parents. They are the kind of people you would see at a starbucks talking about how we are all slaves to the system as they drink their cappifrappachino venti. They listen to music that has extreamly over thought out lyrics that are ment to be sad and heartfelt even though they have no deeper meaning.

Basicaly Emo is a prep who has black hair and wears fish nets.

God I hate those bastards! Is it just me, or do all of them seem to think they are gods among men? No, not men; "pathetic unworthy mortals". Hell, I even know a bunch of em who can't wait to die. The meanies wouldn't let me kill them tho; dodged all 5 bricks that I threw at them. Anyway, eachtime I see one of those retards I feel like pissing on high-tension wires.

This reminds me of an event that occoured yesterday..
I was on my way home from a friend when a girl sitting on a bench asked me if I was going in Karens class.
She had obviusly noticed my school and education shirt I was wearing and knew someone who went the same education. Since this particular education ,industrial design, is very, very rare in my hometown there was a very big chance that i went in the same class as Karen, which in fact I did.

When I told her that i did, she looked at me and said:
Your school is ok, but cmon, reading industrial design? Get a life.

At this point I could have given her a speech about how much of an idiot she was telling me to get a life when she never had seen me before not knowing me at all. And besides theres absolutely nothing geeky with industrial design either.

But i kept my mouth shut, just smiled, and left the place.
Hopefully she will one day think of this event and understand how stupidly she acted.

My point with this little story is, that there are lots of morons in this world. n00bs and Emo and stuff. But I dont think the right way is to insult them for being "stupid", that doesnt help anyone.
Just let them be and they will grow up, just like everyone else.

It would have been great if they had been just plain stupid. It's not their fault, after all, that the doctor dropped them head-down on the maternity floor when they were born. The problem is that these people think they're geniuses and make fun of anyone who they consider a "geek" or "uncool". That girl you talked about, Mister, obviously thought you were one and that's why she was a little b*tch. These people'll end-up cleaning a geek's toilet anyway .

I never really get why "emo" kids have such a bad rep, but then I don't think I've ever come across one. Perhaps its an American thing.

I listen to a load of music that could be called emo (Alkaline Trio, Dashboard Confessional, The Get Up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, Saves The Day, pretty much anything on Vagrant Records etc...), and have mates that do the same. I mean, is there something inherently wrong with music being emotional? I absolutely hate when, because I listen to certain types of music, some random internet person who knows f**k all about me thinks they can label me as something like "emo". I also listen to ska, punk, rock, and enjoy plenty of other genres, and I've never really been mocked for any of those. Emo on the other hand, even for people who can't name a single band of that genre, seems to be met with complete distaste. Maybe there are some people out there that read too much into emo music, and are overly emotional wrecks with bad fashion sense, but thats hardly the fault of the bands and shouldn't condemn everybody who listens to them to some crappy stereotype.

Yeah, but people like goths think they're special because they listen to someone groan on and on about how depressing life is and then act like tortured artists, annoying people with lives in the process. Well I got news for em: if they find life depressing, they should just kill themselves. No ,wait: I'll do it for them!

Well put. I too never understood the whole anti-emo backlash. It's funny how people criticize them for being sheep by following the cookie-cutter "emo" mold... but it's almost hypocritical becuase bashing "emo" kids seems like a safe and cool thing to do. Like if they paint a bad enough picture no one will stand up for them.

I personally have never ever thought of myself as emo, even though I did go through a phase a few years ago where I listened exclusively to bands of the genre. The music never spilled over into the way I lived my life, and it definitely didn't change my emotional level.

Hmm this post is rambling now, but I just wanted to second what Reno said.

I don't have anything wrong with emo kids in general, mostly because they just sit in corners and cry all day and don't bother you. However, there are certain ones who will walk up to you and start conversations about how much their life sucks. I know this from personal experience, my school is full of them.

I hadn't realized that "Emo" was a reference to a certain group of teenagers, and I've only recently heard the term in reference to music. The only band I've heard to which this label was applied was Brighteyes, and I must say, I hate that stuff. That's not to say all "Emo" music is bad, but the ragged "I'm about to cry" vocals that Brighteyes seems to favor is like shards of broken glass prodding my eardrums. Then again, I'm a metal fan, so I probably have a warped taste in music. However, I'll have to check out some of those bands you mention, ReNo, before I decide to crap on the whole genre.

Whatever the case, I'm not convinced that Emo can be equated to n00b. It seems to me that, from you description, emo kids are simply displaying the usual moody attitude that is endemic to teenagers. They are desperately trying to belong to a particular group of peers, and if that group is perceived as the down-trodden superior race, well, so much the better for the teenage psyche. The key difference here is that n00bs do not form a social group that is mutually supporting or self-perpetuating. N00bs are loaners that are each to some degree unique and spontaneously developing. Certainly they have common features, but they don't band together... oh god. What a horrible thought! There is, praise the net-god, no culture of n00bs. At least, I hope there isn't!

Well, since I started this, I ought to clarify what I meant when I said Emo.

Not the music. I don't care for it, but I don't hate it, and everyone now and then I actually like some of it. Not often. Emo is a type of music AND a type of person, not always at the same time.

The Emo I'm talking about is what I like to refer to as "Things are taking a turn for the purse", or "Teenage boys who wear their sister's clothes and cry almost 24/7 about nothing at all". I'm referring to the near complete loss of masculinity in the men of our culture, which seems to be only here in America. I don't have a problem with homosexuals at all, because they are homosexuals. They are what they are and everyone understands that. Emo boys, on the other hand, threaten to make "pathetic demasculinized cross dresser" the accepted standard for what a man is supposed to be (read: we are our mother's sons). I fear it.

So, for those of you who were getting a little defensive about your musical preferences, don't worry. It's not about that at all.

There is no smoke without fire: I don't think "emo" people are complete fakers, why would they do it? There's probably a problem somewhere in their lives, and they're over-reacting or they cannot handle it, or they're too emotional... In any case, I don't see a reason to hate them. And even if they think they're some kind of tortured artist with a miserable life, why should it bother us?

The only thing that I hate is when someone acts like an "asshole"; like starting to insult our favorite forum for not understanding how it works. He can be a "noob" or an "emo" or a "goth" as much as he likes, just don't be an "asshole" please.

? quoting Coestar

? quote:

Let me elaborate on that just a bit. This all is a SERIOUS problem in out area. It's a small-town hick area, or always used to be. Now more pop-culture stuff is being introduced and people are going overboard. I don't know if it's like this anywhere else, but its rampant here, and apparently where Coestar lives too.

If you want to be a "cool" male, you must be completely feminine now! The idea of being "manly" is so uncool now because of the boybands and these emo douchebags! When i was in High School not too long ago, the "cool" guys started shaving thier arms, legs, chests, backs, pubic areas, and just about anything else that had hair besides the top of thier heads! They started wearing more "metro-sexual" clothing.

It really is true about the demasculinization of american iconography. A while back you could see the major males looked like GUYS. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger, he was really muscular and had the epitome of masculinity for a face; square jaw accentuated brow and all that stuff.

Now the popular males are pierced-eared, fox-faced, slender-jawed, hairless, frosted-haired, abercrombie advert material! It's disgusting. You won't see one chest hair on American TV, and it's giving women the wrong idea of what men REALLY look like (kinda like shaven female porn ppl). So naturally, any of the men who DON'T happen to be hairless like a baby girl feel immense pressure to shave thier chests and legs and other stuff, to be able to attract a girl. Not to mention having to do it so they don't get made fun of in high school.

I would have to shave my entire body every day to be "cool." I fear that pretty soon men shaving thier bodies will become an accepted norm just like women shaving thier legs. It's gonna suck.

I've been called Emo by many people, or angsty or what ever. I like quite a bit of emo music (I enjoy alot of brighteyes stuff, though some of it is a little too emo...).

I only gave my view on what i think emo is to most people.

The real thing that bothers me about emo and things like emo are the fact that they are the anti-culture that evolves into culture. For instance, Grung from the early 90s was the anti-fashion, it was ment to mock the way people invested so much time into how they looked. But is soon becuase the popular fashion, thus becomeing the thing it was trying to "destroy".

Goths came from british punk, it too was kind of an anti-fashion. Now it is fashion, kids adobt it becuase they want to be diffrent from the preps and jocks but infact they just become the dark preps and jocks.

Sure its bad to lable people, but most of the time they dress and act like they do because they want that lable. I have no respect for people that try and fit into a clic becuase they dont have faith in themselves. When people are "goth" and start to hang with other people who are goth, that is diffrent, we all want to be around people like us. Emo kids and what have you, they become a goth or a prep just to join the club.

as for metro-sexuals, I think the crab people south park sums up what I think about all that. If my girlfriend wants me to shave my trouser snake forest, I'll do it, but to change how you are just becuase you think it will get you some ass... thats just sad.

I've never heard of "emo" before. Having thought about it for a time I agree with Kain here. Emos are people who are in some way desperate, probably unhappy. Although; I'm pretty sure there are emos out there who are able to smile. This is probably just a stigma. Like goths are evil all the time (I know at some who are very friendly); or pot-smokers are stoned all the time. I think these emos just have some issues which can be traced back to education. Like a unhappy childhood, parents not caring about them. They resulted in being outsiders. So they need to compensate all this. One main idea about this is "being diff'rent".
Being how they are is just their way of "finding their way".
You can't expect everybody to be happy all the time, can you?

And the typical emo-style is probably only the kind of style they show in public.

Remember: These are just conclusions I made based on my social understanding. I have no real experience with emo people. I should go for it.
