Usually, as long as you've downloaded 100% of the content it will be available for offline play. You might have to check the "Make Available Offline" box under one of the options.

Sadly, I have been offline so long, that the total downloads for "Steam,HL2 & Vid Drivers" is astronomical for a 56k user. I cannot even test your theories yet due to the massive amount of info being transfered to me.

I will update you all on my insights when I am able.

Thanks for your time.

Good to see you back mate, glad you've finally settled in and got the old 'puter connected back to the glorious internet (however unglorious it may seem through the eyes of a 56k!) <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

My thanks to you all for the warm welcome back. It seems however that the download exceeded my time awake so I will have to continue this experiment in the morning.

My hopes are that, updating will be far in between henceforth. Offline play would be a welcome treat as well. I fear however that I will have to log in each time, even with a full updated game.

Night everyone.

wow ive never known better than 56k
if you get online with steam and change your settings so it runs when you log in it will ask you if you want to run it in offline mode

No, once you're in offline mode and everything works, you could stay that way forever ... it also, as I remember, wont connect to the steam network if you're already in offline mode ... you'd have to exit and sign on again ... ALTHOUGH, if you LOGOUT as in .. remove your presence on the steam servers, then yes: you will need to log in every time you try to use Steam.

Anyway, good luck.

Lets be friends, ok?

Much easier than being enemies. Much more work involved and since my disposition won't allow for that kind of time dedication, I accept. I have never been able to fathom how anyone could dedicate enough time necessary to acquire an enemy. It is after all the internet and removing the offending person is a log off away. I would however advise to henceforth, if I happen to say something contrary to your views on a map to only ignore it, don't remove my right to have that viewpoint.

The good news is, my Steam now acknowledges "Offline Mode"

The bad news, My HL2 refuses to load. It gives no error messages, it simple fails to load.

Subsequently, my Hammer editor now claims "No textures present"

Any clues?

9 hours+ and no one knows?

(groans)

I reckon I finally came up with an original dilemma around here.

Mapping forum. Search.

Unless you would care to inform the the keywords for the search I would have to say "The search option sucks ass"

"Offline Mode" is not it BTW.

I noticed however that, searching for things like "Polls" and such also suck ass.

Now, the question is/was, how can updating my system for offline mode remove my textures and render my game unloadable?

Nickel, I have probably searched those forums more since I have been here, than you have so that advice also sucks ass. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

I made most of my snarkmarks by answering Editing questions, Dickenstien. You would probably search for "no textures."or something... Dude, it may not be there, i dont know.

anyway, I don't think offline mode would do anything to your textures. I run in offline all the time and it still gives me my textures...

Calling someone names? Thats your answer?

I am telling you this slowly, since your ability to come into a conversation in the middle seems to enlighten you but little. My machine worked prior, it fails now. End of story.

My editor worked perfectly, now it does not. All I have done since then and now, is hook my machine to 56k, ( I had DSL and it always was up to date) and after a few hours I had no functional HL2 or Hammer.

If this is a new issue, so be it, but I am a self problem solver and only ask for assistance when I have exhausted all other recourse.

Do not call me names again, at least not without due course.

I need assistance, not pricks. I can get that in real life.

When you say it fails to load, do you mean it just doesn't do anything when you double-click it? If so, I think I did hear about a similar problem, but I can't remember where (helpful as ever). I rarely recommend this, but the steam forums and the steam support system might be good places to start. I get a problem where after a while CS source will say it's loading, and then the screen will disappear and nothing else will happen. It acts as if I never clicked on it in the first place. A simple reboot seems to fix this. If you have a friend who has the latest Steam caches you could copy them across - I used to do this to update before I got broadband.

First and foremost, I would like to apologize for my poor handling of this situation between Nickel and myself. You must understand, I have a very limited time frame to play on my computer so any disruption is aggravating. Second, you must also understand that I am very self reliant on my own skills at solving problems. I had indeed searched countless threads prior to the poor advice I received to "Search".... Thirdly, the issue couldn't have been solved by anyone here because you did not have all the variables, for that matter neither had I. The solution was simple once I knew them all and I will explain them in a moment. Be aware that I do not ask for assistance often, nor easily. It is my practice to exhaust all other sources before crying for help. I would like to say however that since this was my first crisis, Snarkpit as a whole handled it poorly, but as I stated, even if anyone tried to help, it would have amounted to nothing. Now on to the solution.

1: Be absolutely certain that YOU are the only individual working on a problem when attempting to resolve an issue. As it turned out, my son was trying to help, without my knowledge and we were essentially messing things up worse.

2: I have 56k. (groans repeatedly) It was taking me literally hours to update. I had the update set to "Load game upon completion" or whatever it says when you check the little box. Apparently it finished while I was away and my son took over.

3: Upon loading Steam, there was a pop up message stating that my video drivers were out of date as well. My son obliged me by downloading the new drivers. What he is not aware of is, you MUST uninstall the previous drivers BEFORE installing the new ones. There was apparently a driver conflict and neither the game nor the editor would load due to the lack of a proper driver setting. In spite of the fact that no messages popped up, this was indeed the problem.

4: After uninstalling the old and reinstalling the new drivers, both work perfectly again.

Again, I apologize for my poor handling. I was distressed, and my only advice seemed to be an insult to my already extra-ordinary attempts at utilizing the search option. The search option BTW sucks ass. There simply was to many variables to sift through, AND not knowing the real problem didn't help matters any.

Thanks for your time.
