Hello.
I bought a new PC recently. What's the best way to transfer HL2 and all
my favorite Steam games from my previous computer to the new one ?
I'm not planning on re-downloading the whole game again.
I suppose I better install Steam on the new computer ... then what ?

You can right click on any game in your steam menu and select "backup
game files", which will then give you the choice of which games to
backup. No idea what happens after that as I've not tried it, but it
will probably let you burn them all to DVD or copy over a network or
something.

Network them, share the steam folder on the old PC. Install Steam on
the new PC and run it, let it update itself (I've run into plenty of
problems just copying everything over into a fresh Steam install).
Start everything downloading (HL2, CSS etc) and quit steam before they
finish. Copy all the GCFs from the old PC onto the new PC.

You've actually tried this method, KingNic ?
I know the backup thing, Reno, but I don't see any option to ... restore backup or something like that.

I can somewhat vouch for Kingnic's method, as back before there was a
built in backup tool was the only time I copied across content and I
did it similar to how he describes.

When I got my new PC, I just re-installed and re-downloaded everything. It took just over an hour--not too bad.
I just started the process, and went to work. By the time I got back home, everything is installed.
Not really a hassle.

All you have to do, as Satch said, is download Steam, login with your
account, and all you games will be available for download. Just
spend some time downloading and updating them. I did that just
before I went to bed, and in the mornign I had them all.

Guys, I do have a download limit. Downloading HL2 + CS:S only will take me 3 gigabytes of bandwidth. And that's a lot.

KingNic is right, except all you have to do is move the GCF files over. Then when you go to my games, you click on each one you have telling it to "download" the content. It will actualy start trying to DL the games, but it will then figure out that you already have everything and finish. I've done it several times.

Re: restoring game back-ups, the utility just creates an exe and a load
of files. Run the exe to restore them, though I reckon copying gcfs is
better.

When i needed to install steam at a second computer i just installed
it, logged in and moved the entire SteamSteamApps folder through the
network to the other computer. It worked.

Thanks for all your answers people, but I think I'll stick to the official method.
(Move the whole Steam directory, delete the clientregistry.blob, run steam.)

Last time I tried, they made it so you couldn't just copy over GCF files. That was some time ago, so I don't know if it were changed back or not. But, obviously if it doesn't work use the backup utility ... this is what it's for.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

When i got a new computer, i just made backupfiles and then ran them on
the new computer. The installation took about 15 minutes and then done,
simple as that.
