Audacity worked well for me. In fact, it was the software that I used to edit the soundtrack for my wedding ceremony (processional/recessional).

stuff i record my guitar with is cool edit pro, it's fun and easy ,not pro though, but good enuff for me, cubase is nice too

if you're gonna make a (electronic) song, nothing beats Reason 3 imo,
but for simply editing wav's, those posted above are good. i've got the
one that came with my audigy. i use the "record what you hear" function
frequently, e.g. for recording from radio streams. (samples ofcourse..
yeh )

Cool edit pro (aka adobe audition) is widly used in industry, i think,
and its ability to do a hell of a lot makes it really good
