I know I've seen this sort of thread elsewhere, but I am curious about my fellow SnarkPitters. Personally, I think I have a rather unconventional customization for my layout.

+ invert mouse y-axis
7.7 mouse sensitivity (for Steam games)

strafe left - a
strafe right - d
forward - right mouse
back - z
jump - s
crouch - x
run/walk - Ctrl
use - space bar

primary weapon - left mouse
secondary weapon - middle mouse
reload - r
last weapon used - q
flashlight - f

Hmm interesting set up satchmo, you seem to have some original doom set up in there. Mine:

- invert mouse y-axis (I cant play like that!)
5.0 mouse sensitivity (Sniper!!)

strafe left - a
strafe right - d
forward - w
back - s
jump - spacebar
crouch - Ctr
run/walk - shift
use - e

primary weapon - left mouse
secondary weapon - right mouse
reload - r
last weapon used - q
flashlight - f

Score Board - Tab/F1

Dont for get the scrolling though weapons: Mouse wheel up and down (or in quake/UT games ill have it scroll with Q and E)

I use this setup that I made up, I really like it <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Reg mouse
Around 3.0 sensitivity

Forward - E
Backward - R
Strafe Right - F
Strafe Left - D
Jump - A
Duck - S
Lean keys - C and V ( left and right respectively)
Prone - Z

Shoot - LMB
Alt. Function - RMB
Reload - MMB

That's the basic stuff for most games... if you get your hand in the right position, everything is right there... I love it <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Pretty standard here. This is what I generally use for all FPS games.

movement - WASD
Use - E
Crouch - Shift
Prone - Ctrl
Lean left/sprint - Caps
Lean Right - F
Flashlight - F or R
Jump - Space
Firemode/Scores - Tab
Zoom - T/G/Z
Melee/Previous Weapon - Q
Primary Attack - Mouse 1
Secondary - Mouse 2
Reload - Mouse 3

Ghost Recon, of course, is completley different! If there is no secondary action, I generally set mouse2 to run or throw grenade. There'd be some large differences if I had more then three buttons on my mouse.

My mouse sensitivity is pretty high, since my mouse has a very poor "grid". I generally set it to about 14 in HL Games. Otherwise, I'll end up hitting my keyboard and junk.

I want a new mouse, my friend has a really nice one, only about $30 now, it's very smooth and sensitive.

Anyway, something that's related to this: I think z-boards are retarded.

Omegaslayer: Yes, I got used to playing the original Doom and Doom II, and I never changed after that.

French Toast: I thought I was f**ked up in my wierd configuration, but yours is just totally strange.

Crono: You use pretty much the modern default settings for controls.

-----

Crono, get a wireless optical mouse. It's got the freedom of movement, plus excellent sensitivity.

I didn't trust it for shooter games at first, but when my wife bought me one, I fell in love with it. It's a Logitech.

It is a logitech optic mouse. I have no qualms with cables. Wireless is just another battery I'd have to charge ... I would, however, use one for my laptop, if it were better.

What I was talking about is the sensitivity "grid", every optic mouse has one. My grid is just larger, because it was a cheaper mouse ...

Not to mention I don't have money ... otherwise I'd have a hard drive that didn't sparatically turn off, a better video card, and the mouse I was talking about <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Yeah, I know, that's what I said! I got used to them a long time ago though ... back when all the crazy people were using the arrow keys. or a TFGH configuration. It's comfortable, and that's all I really care about. I may start using ESDF for movement though ... there's just too many seperate functions in some games now, it's just crazy.

Oh and with all bitching aside, my mouse is fantastic considering I payed about $10 3 years ago. Much better then the more common Logitech optics at the time (the $30 ones).

I'm a lefty so have primary fire on right mouse button and secondary on LMB. Same in Windows too - my mouse buttons are swapped over from the default usage (LMB to access right click menus etc).

Mouse wheel - change weapon.

Arrow keys - forwards/backwards/strafe.

Keypad 0 - Jump

Keypad 1 - Sprint

Right ctrl - crouch

Right shift - reload

Enter - Use

Delete/End/Insert/Home/PageUp/PageDown - stuff like flashlight, suit zoom, etc.

I generally use the default HL controls, slightly modified.

Mouse not inverted, sensitivity somwhere between 5 and 10 (I'm comfortable with anything in that range).

WASD for movement
Q = last weapon (I use this a lot)
E = use (In a game with leaning eg. CoD I'll use Q/E for leaning and F as use)
F = flashlight (if no leaning)
Space/Ctrl = Jump/Crouch
Shift = Walk/sprint, depending on game
Scroll wheel = weapon select (no fast switch, except in Q3/UT)
Mouse Left/Right = Primary/Alternate fire
Scroll wheel button = reload (this is probably the best decision I've made)

Thats about it. Different games have slightly different setups, but this is what I try to adhere to.

A = strafe left, D for right
S = back
E = use
Mouse1 = shoot, Mouse2 = forward
C = crouch
Z = alternate fire
Space = jump
F = flashlight
R = reload
G = firemode

sensitivity's at around 20 in normal HL, 30-ish in TS.

I'm always on game defaults. Whatever the game defaults are, I use 'em. This can lead to some confusion in games, so occasionally I change to the HL defaults which I'm most familiar with, but otherwise everything is just whatever's in the box. For source games I'm on mouse sensitivity 12.

On the mouse thing, I primarily use my laptop. I have this mouse, it'sa little bit smaller than a normal one, 2 button and a wheel. It's wireless optical, and the wireless transmitter thing is just a little piece of plastic you plug in , and you can use your mouse for like 10 feet. And the little piece of plastic fits in the bottom of the mouse so you can carry it...

Sweet.

Hugh, you've got the most similar keyboard layout to mine. Most people don't use the right mouse button for moving forward anymore.

You must be a Doom fan, back in the days.

I first started with doom also, but i never knew you could use a mouse to look around until a long time after. I started mousing on the first Jedi FPS game that was out. i use those defaults

i always use defaults, set the mouse up high sens ( almost max :o ) in single player games and low sens ( 2.0 ) in counter strike, also in counter strike i bound F to voice communication as a flashlight is utterly useless in that game <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

i learnt to use the default settings and i'm quite happy with that as most games use the same settings i won't have to fidle with settings before i go play <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">
