im 9 years old, so dont expect perfect mapping, i hope im welcomed here
We won't expect you to be perfect, but we do expect you to try for perfection! That's what this community is all about.
As for where to start... you might work your way through the newbie tutorials. When I was a new mapper, I would pick a theme for my maps that targeted a specific technique I wanted to learn, so for example, if I wanted to learn how to make lasers, I'd make a map themed with lots of lasers in it, etc.

Some people are like slinkys...
They aren?t really good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one tumbles down the stairs.

welcome, no-ones perfect, just try not to post maps that realy aren't worth posting
plan out your maps, maybe even sketch most areas out to give youself a general idea of what ur upto.
also try to be friendly etc.
a good place to start is reading some of the HL1 tutorials on spicing up architecture, using the clip tool and using vertex manipulation.
If you read / learn those tutorials then you'll have a good basic knowleage of hammer, then you can move on to stuff like displacement maps etc.
Also try to learn alot of the enities by just making small test maps for them, that way you can unsure use of the correct entities i nthe correct situations witch makes maps more fun.
here's some good tuts to start with:
http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL&id=10
http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL&id=93
http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL&id=80
http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL&id=92
http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL2&id=112
http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL2&id=113
That should give you a good start, the reason i pointed em out is that most people forget about the hl 1 tutorials when mapping for hl2, but the hl1 tutorials contain lots of valuable information that is very important in making an interesting map

What I recommend you do before posting any maps of your own is to
browse through the map collection at the SnarkPit. Better yet,
download some of them and walk around in it to get a feel of the scale
and texturing. Most importantly, get to know the quality of work
that are posted at the Pit.
As for you, michael, let's pull that gerbil from your butt first before you say another word.

Hi there, welcome to the pit. We're all like one big happy family here, and it's so much fun.

Who the f**k is behind that pseudonym!
Anyway, welcome Toxic. My only advice is dont go n00b like several newcomers have been before...
And 9 is a perfect age to start mapping, for one you have alot of time to learn and for two: adolescence usually hinders abilities to map (mine anyway) so all that raw creative talent at 9 can be weilded to create excellent maps!
Welcome!

Welcome young one, don't feel left out at all, I started mapping when I
was 8. It might take you a bit, but in time you'll turn out some
great maps.
Until Later...

Welcome.
My youngest brother is also 9, and he's picking up the mapping somewhat so that isn't necessarily a problem. Have fun!

You sound very mature for your age -
don't ruin it by posting G-man theories and who/what the combine are, or if you have any rants/raves about steam, there is a place
here for that junk. All in all this community is some what close together (or was a while ago). Welcome.
hehe, this brings back memories of my first posts!
