What would you most likely buy, and why?

I just want to know cause all the people I know seem to favor the PLaystaion 3 over the 360 and I'm the only one who likes the 360 better .

Dude if your gunna do a poll, you gotta have a no vote option. Also you missed out the Nintendo Revolution, and that other new console coming out soon.

Its boxed shape, but has an angled stand for it.

Agreed. Where's the revolution? Bearing in mind that it has Metroid Prime 3 and the ability to download old games (i.e. Goldeneye), it would not be unreasonable for some people to buy it... <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif"> I certainly will.

Add a "None: I can't play those damn things!" option and I'll vote.

I voted playstation 3. The first 2 never let me down and backwards compatability means my collection never becomes obsolete!

Xbox 360 for me, mostly based on the love of their last system.

It depends on the games. I wouldn't spend money on an Xbox, ever, though. They don't deserve money for licensing other people's systems.

BUT! I would definitely want the Revolution, backwards compatible and download-able games (emulated back to the NES).

I think Sony is a bunch of ass clowns. But, dammit, they have Konami by the balls. I'd imagine things would play out close to the same except, I bet MS would try to get more exclusive titles. I know Sony is going to lose a crap load of money, they didn't even make a profit on the PS2 until last year (the actual console, before that they were making all their money off games, which is why they were mad people just bought PS2s to play DVDs)

It really depends on the games and the price. PS3 will cost an arm and a leg. The Xbox will have the same generic crap that the current Xbox has. The revolution will have the same old same old Nintendo stuff, which I would be most comfortable spending money on.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I get a stronger urge to strangle you each time your opinion of the Xbox gets voiced Crono <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif"> Stop worrying about principles and don't let them blind you to the wealth of great games on the system.

I hate all the console politics people get into - appreciate them all for what they have. When I was looking at news sites about the PSP, about 80% of news comments were made by DS fans slagging off the PSP. Jumping over to the DS news comments, the situation was reveresed. Spread the love all around if you can afford it, or pick the one that suits you best. Just because you jump on board with one doesn't mean you have to defend your choice vehemently by slagging off the others.

Heh, that's true, ReNo.

Personally, I like the PC most. It's multi-functional, and upgradeable. More expensive but for me it's worth it. So, yeah... <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

You mean all the games that are on other systems? Or the ones that they ported to computer? :P

I don't really have a "preference" in the way you're thinking, but, seriously, there's little reason to buy an Xbox, for me, and for many people, even if they don't realize it. It's bulky, has the same games as everything else, amongst other things I don't agree with (I don't like how they have their online situation set up in some aspects).

Sony stuff just simply costs too much for the quality of the product (PSP included, but is broadly poor over all their electronics). I'm sorry, I think not buying something because of designed defects is a good reason.

I don't know where it is, but there was an article quoting SCEA (I think it was the American branch) CEO, as saying something along the lines of admitting to developing the PS2 to break, so consumers have to purchase a new one.

Let me get this straight though: you're telling a computer scientist to ignore principles regarding a computer related product (literally)? That's like telling a mechanic to take his car to Jiffy Lube, he/she(d) would get very ... agitated.

Don't let that video game induced rage out on me! I have valid opinions, not many other people really understand what I'm talking about, that's all.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I'm sure you do have valid opinions and I'm sure your principles are good ones, but it just seems a shame to let these things get in the way of enjoyable gaming. I mean, I hate the fact that since I bought my Xbox reasonably early, I'm lumbered with a s**tty Thompson drive that crashes in about 60% of new games. I still love my Xbox though, as I think its positives far outweigh its negatives, no matter how deal sinking those negatives may be in some people's books. Even if a company does have faults or the console isn't technically sound, should that mean you forsake playing all the great games being put out by good developers for that console purely because of the console they find themselves on? You aren't really the sort of target I'm getting at here as you DO like games on any console - plenty of PS2 games for example, despite your obvious disdane toward Sony.

I buy consoles for the gameplay experiences - not their technical specifications, manufacturing processes, marketing approach, or business practices.

Oh and most of my favourite games from this generation have been Xbox exclusives, so I'm certainly one the few who "needed" one

No, I know what you mean. But, to be honest: yes, a consoles flaws is something that discourages me from even thinking about purchasing the machine. I, sadly, got a PS2 within the month it was released, I was young and reckless! Waste of damn money. Not to say I wouldn't eventually have had one, but not many good games, if any, came out it's first year (MGS2 came out 2001 .. or so) ((Not to mention, the f**king thing broke THE DAY I bought it. Not entirely sure what happened, but thinking back, it seems like something got a little too much power and fried/shorted)

But, I've read so many things about the crap the early Xbox's did. Oh man. Grinding the disc? HA! I know they fixed that by the third shipment or something, but still.

It wouldn't be as bad if all these companies didn't claim to "be the best", because quite frankly, they're bastards and don't deserve a cent. The only thing I'd actually give Sony is that they took the R&D time to create a product. I really have no respect, or tolerance, for Microsoft.

But if it's any consolidation, I feel the same way about Ford. So it's not really designated to a specific field. But, MS has done way too many negative things, in my book, that I can't look past. I know their product practices, and I know they apply them to all aspects of their business.

On top of that, it really sucks, because, like Ford, they started off as a decent company trying to make their field of business better (while still making money). If they didn't abandon that idea, then I'd probably have a much different opinion of them.

What exclusive titles? You can't say Halo 2 or Panzer Dragoon Orta (Since those are the only exclusives I know of at this point) I know it's version of D3 was unique, or something.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Project Gotham Racing series, Amped series, Dead or Alive series, Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta (just cause you know it doesn't stop it being awesome ), Phantom Crash, Ninja Gaiden, Gun Valkyrie, Otogi series, etc... I've done this list before but you never take it on board To me, the Xbox has probably got the most consistantly good exclusives, even more so than Nintendo for my tastes. On the other hand, as you rightfully draw attention to, it also has potentially the fewest exclusives.

Truth told, I bought the Xbox with a handful of games in mind, and they all impressed me no end (PGR, Halo, Amped, JSRF, DOA3 - what an awesome first set of games). I bought the PS2 with a handful of games in mind, and they all disappointed to some degree (Auto Modellista, Tekken Tag, FFX, Gran Turismo 3, Ridge Racer 5). I bought the gamecube with a handful of games in mind, and haven't really had a chance / had the interest to sit down and play many of them at all (Eternal Darkness hasn't even been out of its box, I'd played RE4 to death on my old flatmate's GC before I bought my own)

All 3 have won me round in their own ways; the Xbox in all round gaming goodness both online and off, the PS2 for the odd exlusive gems like Ico and GT4 (though if more would actually make it to the UK - such as Front Mission 4 and Katamari Damaci - it might be higher in my estimations!), and the Gamecube for spontaneous flat multiplayer sessions on Mario Kart and Mario Tennis. All 3 have a place in my collection and I hope all 3 of the upcoming ones will too, but I'm fairly confident I'll be happy if I make the 360 my first investment.
