I'm sure people who vote in a BBC poll are experts on the subject...

It would be good if it makes FPS games playable on a console, but I'm not sure how it will do that. Best case scenario, its like one of those arcade machines with the guns. You still get parallax problems.

Good point, but sadly it's not the experts who'll be buying it. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> Obviously only people who read the BBC technology section will have voted, rather than anybody who reads anything on the BBC, and I suspect mostly Nintendo fans will have voted, meaning that's divided their fans. Anyway, BBC polls aren't that bad an indication. Bear in mind it's the general public who buy these things as well.

Apparently, Nintendo is supporting a "shell" for the revolution controller. IGN, being the douches they are, just assumed it'd look something like this. (I'm kidding. It's a good guess)

Now, THAT is what I was talking about for something like Star Fox. It'd be fantastic, taking that the gyroscopics is still active.

This looks better by the minute. Since, obviously, it's supporting old methods while adding something that is completley new. Of course, I'm assuming they've got the gyroscopics down and I don't see how they couldn't, since Nintendo, specifically, is anal about things working properly. If they don't work even by a small percentage, they don't release it. They don't sacrafice things they think are important, control is a big one. It's the same reason why the PlayStation even exists. Sony was creating an add on to the SNES to play larger, CD based games. And through it all, Nintendo just said, "It takes too long to load", which is why they didn't release a CD/DVD based console until they removed loading times as an issue. (But it's also the reason why Sony went off and finished the PSX on their own) So, if they wont even let you be annoyed by loading times (on 1st and 2nd party games, no control over ports or such) then I really think that smooth and easy controlability would be a little higher on their list.

In any aspect though, this looks very promising. Now it only relys on the games that will come out, and looking at the current trend when it comes to Nintendo based games and innovation, the outlook, in my opinion, looks good.

That controller was made up by IGN. Nintendo hasn't released any images of what the "Shell" would look like.

In fact, that's a 'digital' rendition.

I wonder if the controller is sensitive enough and they would put enough work into a game so that the character on-screen would copy your movements with the controller near exactly. If Nintendo pulls it off, sword swingin' games would rock.

it won't really work like a sword, it can't detect motion on any other set of axes but it's own. like, it only detects if you've moved it on a pivot point somwhere inside the actual object itself, not an external axis like your elbow.

but yeah that'd rock. I am just waiting for the internet to become like OTHERLAND where it's ALL like a MMORPG only it's real-time and not role-playing. but instead of sites, you have a virtual building to go into with your player character. pretty sweet eh?

You never know, it could use a very small accelerometer. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> Sorry, I've just done some physics coursework on location tracking, so I want to actually convince myself the 3000 words is worthwhile!

For those who don't know, you can measure the acceleration, integrate it twice to give a distance covered, and combine the results from all three axis (as vectors) to give a final result. It's not very accurate, but only since the further you move the worse the integration error gets. On this scale it might work...

Anyway, I'm just being picky/optimistic. Sorry! I'm probably wrong actually.

I reckon a "shell" would be a brilliant idea - makes sure that the controller isn't too unique.

I really hope one day the whole sword swinging thing will work .

Yeah and if they figured out some revolutionary idea to make the OTHERLAND concept a reality within the next 10 years that would rock. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/clap.gif">

thanks for the video link. I just read a couple articles and it sounds interesting. I'm still trying to decide if this is a good idea or a newer version of the powerglove. Admitedly I never got to try that one out as a kid <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

My first and main concern with the whole concept is people getting used to the true 3D controller. Call me a lazy bastard, but I picture my arm getting tired holding that thing in the air for long periods of time. And I know there are plenty of people a lot more lazy than I am.

But hey, it could be a lot of fun too.

I couldn't help but notice; the remark about Nintendo and SNES playstation addon coment i wrong. The loading times was an excuse, Nintendo just saw that because sony would own the part of the system that played cd's, Sony would make most of the profit leaving Nintendo out in the cold. With that, Nintendo changed componies when dealling with cds, of coarse we know what happened there.

Sumed up...
Sony make snes cd player...Sony could've made most profit...Nintendo shook in their pants with fear and dropped sony, without notification.
(Sony announced they were teaming up with Nintendo at a CES, but Nintendo shoved it in their face.)

Sony, POed, decided to make the PSX a stand alone console.

You know, I've actually got nothing to say

Yeah. I don't doubt money had a lot to do with it, actually. But, what I was aiming at really, was their distaste for load times. It's the reason why they didn't use CDs for the N64 (as far as I know) ... I always thought (based on discussions and articles) that it was also because of the time increase that came with CDs at the time.

I do know at the time, Nintendo was full of themselves, however. The only thing that I think that came from that, was they changed their view (Since, it really taught them a lesson, I think). It's pretty obvious, even if you hate Nintendo, that this is a bold attempt to actually make a difference in gaming.

I also, do like the fact that there will finally be a well made 3D control mechanism. No longer controlling a 3D world with a 2D interface.

And on another Note, the Power Glove was really ... never well implemented, just because, it was the freakin' NES. 2D side-scrolling games being controlled by a primitive motion capture device. I think, now, (20 Years later?) they've got it down.

The mat that was better used with your hands? And with friends. Got some insane track record times that way.

The one peripheral I think the NES nailed was the light gun. It was pretty accurate.

I liked the super-scope. Had some pretty badass games, if I remember. I think though, the power-glove and the Virtual Boy are the worst things Nintendo has every released. (Not specifically in that order)

A good powerglove for Black and White would be cool.
