In another Thread Crono pointed out that he hates when people prononce "data" as "da-tah" instead of "day-tuh."

I agree, but along with that I wanted to post some more examples of things that people say that get on my nerves. I hope that anyone who reads this who says these things will realize the error of thier way, and know that it makes them look dumb to ppl who know.

What they say

The real thing.

Safety deposit box

Safe deposit box

anyways

Anyway (FFS??anyway?)

Axises (plural for axis)

Axes (pronounced ?ax-eez?)

Matrixes

Matrices (matri-seez)

Ain?t

Isn?t, am not, aren?t, etc?

This needs fixed

This needs TO BE fixed

PIN number

PIN (personal ID number)

more to come...

[edit] ppl also say "extraneous" when they mean "extemporaneous" These are pretty much opposites.

People who pronounce linux as "lie-nuks" and then proceed to correct me when I pronounce it as "linuks" (the "i" is pronounced as in "pit").

I don't correct you, you friggin' don't correct me.

I'm not deliberately trying to contradict you or anything, but I was slightly confused when I saw this. I've always said "day-tuh", and thought that "dah-tuh" was one from America. OED says "day-tuh" - I guess it's one of those things that will never be solved... <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

it's day-tuh as far as I know. Also, data is plural of datum, and ppl say "datas"

I've always said KA-zuh there is a russian word "kazaa" which means "female goat" and it's KA-ZHAH with empahsis on both syllables. So, ya never know.

I've always said "LIH-nuks" (i as in "pit")and ppl corrected me all the time.

ppl say "ideal" instead of "idea" "that's a good ideal!"

[edit] I've always said "lie-nuks" because the guy that created it's name was "Linus" (torvalds) and linus id pronounced "lie-nus" but I'de taken to saying it as "lih-nuks' a few years ago. just to clarify that.

I hate it when people say, "It's a GUI interface", since GUI means: graphical user interface. It's even worse if someone says, "It has a graphical GUI interface". It makes me want to rip their lungs out.

YES! Exactly, datum is the singular version of the word, and it's pronounced Day-tum (Like the an-acid). The thing I don't understand is people who say "Day-tum" then later they'll say, "Da-tuh".

My old CS instructor said it whatever way the person asking a question said it. It was pretty funny.

Lin-ux, not line-ux. I don't care how his name is pronounced. However, I pronounce SuSE differently then everyone else, and I really don't care, it sounds better (Instead of suse (rhymes with zues) I say Sue-suey. Sounds way better)

You know what else pisses be off? Double negatives. My mom does it all the time. And if it weren't bad enough, she uses the word "ain't" as the first negative word, usually followed by "no", or "don't" or "nothing".

I mean, it's one thing to say, "No, I don't think that", but she goes, "I don't think nothing like that" ... I've heard people say "I ain't done nothing like that" too ... my brain screams when it happens.

I can see it now, the next thread will be on spelling of words. I can see the war of the Os and Us coming.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

No, I have to argue. The way I have heard people say "data" is "day-da"
And, as from linux, I have heard the "genuine" spelling Linus Torvalds has give out, (hey - it's also easier for me since I'm almost finnish :P). It's "lee-n?x" but lots of people say "le-nux". The ? is kinda estonian-finnish-german character you know :P So you might not get it at instant.

i don't know nothing about double negatives pissing me off, not unless they aren't used right.

I always heard Day-tuh and say I like that too.

This might be a Massachusetts thing (USA) but people here say "like" almost between every fudging word

LOL - Sometimes I even say this, just out of sheer lazieness. And I can understand about on AIM or MSN if your in a hurry. But when you f*cking write LOL in a note or a piece of paper. That just makes me angry.

Kah-zuh (so what, i say it with my Boston accent)

Lin-ucks

Any one that says "pwns" on something like, Xbox Live (Halo 2). Or they say "Im so leet" and have no idea what they are saying.

(By the way I never got around to mentioning this. I like your new Avatar Nickel)

There are many words/phrases that I dislike but if I had to chose one that bothers me most its the country saying for the word "Wash"

It's pronounced "Worsh" or "Warsh" , assuming you can properly say the word "War" as in to do battle with another country.

The fact that bothers me isn't the mispronouncement, its the fact that when you ask them to spell it they invariably say "W*A*S*H".

I ask, "Where's the "R"?

They almost always say "What "R"?

Anyway, thats mine.

Thanks Win9x, old chap!

It seems the thread has evolved into "what people say that is stupid and pisses you off." So here's a BIG one. "Git 'er dun!"

If a person were able to kill words, those are the ones i'd bump off. People in the Ozarks, here say it ALL THE TIME! and they think it's so funny!

And the 1337 5p33k in real life's GOTTA GO! This guy at work says "Uberleet haxor." all the fudging time! and then, insted of saying "gay" he says "gaxor" (pronounced "gack-sore") This guy REALLY get's on my nerves a LOT, so most anything he says is annoying, but this is one of the foremost. He also tries to speak Elizabethan English ALL DAY, sometimes, but he's dumb,so he doesn't know how to use, thee and thou and thine and mine, so he just mixes it all up and makes himself look like an ass...

Another thing i hate (that Coworker1 does) is the -Izzle thing, where you take the end off of every word and add izzle in it's stead. FFS...

and, finally, I admit to actually saying "LOL" aloud once. It's never happened again since I punched myself in the nuts as punishment. (FYI i pronounce it "lole" like hole.)

? quoting fishy

wtf do these people think ABS stands for?

Considering that its stands for "Anti-lock Braking System" it is a bit annoying yeah.

This thread reminds me of the acronym they used in the Ringworld books. "TANJ"
