A recent outbreak of a "plague" in a popular online game has scientists considering how the virtual world may provide clues to what people would do in real-world pandemics. In the role-playing game World of Warcraft, a "corrupted blood" spell killed characters and affected players in unexpected ways.

Very cool, and very interesting. They've started to use games for a number of scientific reasons recently, so why not something like this.

Was corrupted blood that infection that was supposed to stay in one place but due to a bug characters carried it out of that one place and the infection was meant for high level characters so it killed lower level people very fast?

The explanation:

A new dungeon was released recently called Zul'Gurub, and the main boss gives players a disease called "corrupted blood" which did a ridiculous amount of damage over time and would infect people near you. Basically, someone had managed to hearthstone out of the dungeon and into a major populace with the disease, and unleashed it on all the poor lowbies. Luckily it never happened on my server. ^^ It was patch-fixed a few weeks ago, so don't bother trying it anymore.

The scenario sounds eerily similar to a potential influenza pandemics. The bird flu virus is undergoing mutation, and millions of people could die from it if it evolved in a certain way.

The scary thing is that we can't resurrect people in real life.

that is a great idea, the whole plague thing. they should do things like that for all rpgs, but more variation like natural disasters or full scale real-time wars or something.

WoW was okay but the graphics seemed a little too cartoony for me. i personally thing best RPG ever is Final Fantasy IX.

Best RPG is going to be Oblivion... if that counts as RPG... whichI think it does.

I comenmerate Blizzard for adding these things to the game. In an upcomming release they are going to add costumes for holloween, not much significance on most servers, but fun stuff to do on the good ol' RP servers.

I can't wait for Oblivion. They near-eliminated the only thing I hated about Morrowind: The amount of time travelling back and forth between places. Also now it has havok physics and a supposedly kick-ass AI called Radiant <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">.
