There are quite a few different media players out there, some are really good, and some are really bad.

Since Im getting tired of Windows media player i thought it would be fun to create a thread on the topic.

Which mediaplayer is your favorite, and why?

Winamp, since it's compatible with most audio/video formats, including .ogg (that many other players can't read).

Its probably a thousand pages back but this very topic has arisen before. Don't even ask how to locate it other than trial/error but I know its there.

I personally do not currently have a preferred player choice.

I dedicated 15 seconds to the site's search feature. Can't find the "other" thread you mention. Still, it's probably there under a more obscure name. I'll be damned if I'm going to search for it, though.

I always hated winamp, REALanything, and Quicktime.

I use WMP be3cause it gets on my nerves the LEAST. I hate things that have little tasktray Icons. I hate things that take over all my other file extensions, and they all do that except wmp.

Windows: Media Player Classic (with the KLite codec pack).
Linux: mplayer

I use winamp for music use (if you take the time to organise your collection, the media library rocks) and Media Player Classic for video files. Winamp seems to be quite jerky at times with video, and media player classic works with seperate subtitle files which is occasionally handy.

I use Windows Media Player for some things and Audacity (sp?) for others. I don't really listen to music that often.

^^^^ what ReNo said. I like the media library and easy-to-use playlists. I still watch videos in winamp sometimes since its more convenient (media library, playlists). If its a single video, not a series, I prefer Media Player Classic. And for OGM and MKV format videos Media Player Classic is king.

What skins are people using for WinAMP? I used to use MMD3, but the interface seems a bit crowded compared to WMP10. I'd prefer to use WinAMP for functionality, but now I'm on WMP purely because it's a bit nicer to use.

Foobar2000.

I started using it about a month ago, because I thought Winamp was getting too bloated with features I didn't need. (Podcasting, bleh, bleh, bleh).

I chose Foobar2000. When you first install it, it looks like sh*t. I started customizing it to my own needs (music database, WMA/OGG support, extended playlists, notifications, ..) and now it's a custom media player with all the features I need. Nothing less but most certainly nothing more. The memory footprint is 8 mb, which is very good.

I'd suggest it to anybody who's not afraid of tweaking around and downloading/trying plug-ins.

I posted it in the other thread too, but this is the "Toaster" plug-in. It's a very subtle display (fade in/fade out) of the song playing, and it also adds the ability to pass on the song title to Gaim or MSN, or any other chat client.

I've got Winamp for my music playlists and stuff, mostly because I like the ability to shrink it to a small bar on the top, and always keep it on top of everything else.

For videos, I use Realplayer. It plays anything I've needed so far (winamp hasn't) so it works for me <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

This is what I'm running on winamp...

Skin: Modern
Color Theme: MonoDark

And I run the with the top bar compressed to only whats playing, and a few control options like play, next song, stop, pause, etc. (but usually I have it run in the backround and i just hit next song on my hot key ((crtl+alt+ page up for next and page down for previous))). Also I have a playlist dragged down, because I have a 2,000 song long play list. So... yeah I have a lot of songs I can pick from and I just leave it down. I also have it set to around 50% transparency or so, I really can't remember.

here is a screenshot
