Tomorrow at 5AM, I officially turned 18. I've been so busy for university I didn't really live up to my birthday, but it's cool anyway !

Do you get any new rights when passing 18 in Belgium?

18 is considered adulthood. legal sex starts at 16, but other things like a crime record, driving a car, etc begin at 18. (renting a car is only allowed at 21 i think).

Have a nice one FF, dont get too drunk :P

I take offense to this comment. You make it sound like people have none prior to 18.

I realize that when you are young you often fail to detect such things but when you reach my age your clarity crystallizes a bit.

You have far more rights before 18 than after I assure you. Far more.

I apologize for allowing my manners to degrade. This is a birthday thread, and not mine to confiscate for personal reasons.

I'm sorry.

He said new rights. I don't see anything wrong with that statement. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Happy b-day, FF.

Not quite sure about that. The way I see it, you have to take less responsibility for your actions before you're 18 than after. I'm not sure what rights a 17 y.o. could have that an adult doesn't.

I suggest that you begin a new thread and not hijack this one then.

The fact that neither of you detect your error in perception illustrates the need for such a thread clearly enough IMO to warrant one.

Apparently neither of you are old enough to know exactly what "rights" are. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

2 : something to which one has a just claim: as a : the power or privilege to which one is justly entitled

That's the pertinant definition taken from m-w.com. I don't really think you lose any rights as you get older, you just gain new ones. (The right to drive, the right to drink, the right to smoke, the right to marry.. etc.)

But I understand the general idea of what you were saying. Obviously the halcyon days of childhood are something everyone's too young to appreciate at the time. The lack of responsibility and carefree days are something that I'm already starting to miss, not that I have many new responsibilities, but I'm getting there.

I think a better word to use would be "freedom."

c : the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous <freedom from care>

In that sense, we have more freedom in childhood, but still less rights.

Forceflow, you will forgive the hijacking, wont you?

Yes, I agree the sentence seems to make more sense when you replace "right" with "freedom".

And tone it down a bit. Perception is relative by definition so just because someone sees something differently than you do doesn't mean their perception is erroneous or inferior to yours.

Underdog, I agree with Andrei and AtM. Can't really see what rights you lose when becoming older. Could you give an example?

I had a page long reply and it... disaf**kingpeared.

You three misunderstand my words.

until I cool off from losing my post I will not be fit company.

in short, you each confuse rights with freedoms.

I am going away for a while cause I am so pissed at this 56k right now.....
