Has anyone here gotten this game yet? It was released in the states on the 18th. I got it on friday, and I must say its a very well put together game. I was afraid it was going to be like Doom 3, but it really feels like Quake, intense fast action. I haven't gotten too far in it yet as I was away all weekend, but from what I've played it is very intense and fun, kudos to Raven. Also, being person who makes maps I couldn't help but look at all the pretty architecture, which there is plenty of. This game is freakin beautiful, it shows off the capabilities of the Doom3 engine much better than Doom 3 did.

On the mapping side, you just type 'editor' in the console to get to the level editor, which I think is a form of Radiant (could be wrong though.) There are also in-game editors for stuff like light, sound and special effects. All in all its a pretty nifty SDK.

Edit:
Whoopseh, didn't see the "recently played" topic...

Yes, I have it. It does feel just like a doom3 expansion pack. Actually just as doom3 but only couple of extra levels. Bad game (n)

I've played it and beaten it. Must say I enjoyed it quite a bit too. Good game imo.

I will buy the game regardless of any review. Shame it's so heavy on the system, but quake 3 was just too good. I'll buy it in anticipation of it living up to its prequal.

I mostly like the single player, but I've read that its fairly short. The multiplayer is pretty fun too though, I just got done getting owned in the new tourney mode. I liked Quake 3, and the multiplayer in this is pretty much the same. Quake 4 is more of a sequel to Quake 2 than Quake 3, Q3 didn't have much to do with anything. The game looks somewhat like Doom 3, but the levels aren't as dark and the models are a little better. Lip syncing, while still not great, is a lot better than Doom 3. More importantly it doesn't play like Doom 3, there are no zombies, most enemies shoot at you, and no 'trapped' items where you pick it up and more monsters come. Quake 4 is a lot more fast paced action, where Doom 3 was more survival horror. Its definitely recognizable as Quake to me. There also aren't many areas where you need a flashlight, but when you do you have one attached to your assault rifle and pistol.

The editor isn't working for me anymore though <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

As for the difference in price, you might have been looking at the special DVD edition, which has Quake 2 and two mission packs for it, and costs $10 more in the US.

I was wondering when this thread would show up!!! I have no screen shots because I can't read .tga. Anyways:
Yes I picked up the game, and im telling you this is NO doom 3 at all. The gameplay is entirely different (though the graphics are the same), the AI has improved deramatically (EG: its no shoot shot gun and strafe into the next hallway like Doom 3 was), the attacker cordinate and flank you and such.

This game your actually utilizing all of your weapons (all are the same from Q3 multiplayer, only better looking, and have clips - in the single player) - instead of JUST using the shot gun in Doom 3.

Level design is superb, much more dynamic this time than the linearness that doom 3 had to it. PLUS one our own from the snarkpit designed the levels, Andrew Weldon (aka: KungFuSquirrel), though which ones he designed I dont know.

Multiplayer picks up the pace, they removed clips, and increased running speed, very Quake 3 esque. With their per-poly-hit-detection it makes the game more challenging, because there are nor more hit boxes. Multiplayer maps wern't its strong point, they made a few coppies of Q3 maps that are fine, but other than that it leaves a lot for us mappers to do (and a chance for me to learn the Q3 radiant editor).

The editor works just fine for me (Bring down the console - Ctrl+Alt+~ - , and type "editor", and it will bring you to it, just make sure steam is OFF, for some reason it conflicts with it.

In short your really missing out if you DON'T get this game, *glares at myrk Play it and you will thank yourself.

Quake4 sucks and I am holding this man hostage until I get my 50 bucks back:

Where to begin...

Yes this game is better than Doom3, but really, what isn't?

The level design was awful. Every interior section is cramped as hell and follows the typical box room, door, box room, door, hallway, door design from D3. This is probably a consequence of using the D3 engine, which begs the question: Why use it if thats all you can do with it? There's no variation in the basic map designs and I'll be damned if I can recall a time when there was significant vertical axis combat outside of the outdoor areas. And holy s**t, the outdoor areas... it's comical that an engine as 'powerful' as the D3 engine can't manage to create an outdoor section with a fraction of the detail of the interior sections. Seriously, the outdoor areas could have been ripped from Half-Life they are so blocky and undetailed, and I'm sorry but 2d skyboxes don't cut it anymore.

The AI is dumb as dirt and presents no challenge at all. The only enemies that had an inkling of 'intelligence' were the orange suit guys, and that consisted of hiding behind a box and taking potshots every once in a while. The problem is they don't run from that spot if I shoot a grenade there, and every once in a while they will face the wrong direction and just stand there. Often if they charge at you or you charge at them they won't fire and just die. They don't flank, they don't use grenades, they don't cover for each other. I'd guess that these guys are given 'hints' ala HL2 as to where to stand and cover, but it's nowhere near as flexible or correctly implimented.

The friendly squad guys were cool enough, and I liked my squad enough to feel bad if they bit the dust. However, teammates like these were better done in OpFor where they actually were useful and awesome to fight alongside. Sure, the Q4 guys could kick some ass, but its not very hard to do when they can kill big badguys in like 2 shots and are invincible. Yes, they are invincible. Any time in the second half of the game when you are with a teammate you can just let them do all the fighting with no consequence to yourself, which kinda removes any challenge or any feelings of 'I gotta keep my guys alive and if they die its cause I dropped the ball.'

There were some awesome parts such as the pod ride and other things I won't spoil, but for every awesome part there was an embarassingly bad part like the hovertank sections and the rail shooter sections. And seriously, the hovertank section was probably the worst thing I have played in ages.

The game isn't hard either, I died more from getting caught on details while backpedalling or from my own splash damage from rockets and grenades than I did from monsters.

The multiplayer is pretty much identical to Q3's which is not my cup of tea but I'm sure others like it. I'm already bored by it though and I'm sick and tired of sticky lag and other funky things that I haven't experienced since I was using a 26kbs AOL connection while playing HLDM back in 1999.

I've beaten the game already and frankly I doubt I'll ever play it again, so it will be gathering dust next to Doom3 as another game that I'll never touch.

Kinda sad considering how great Quake and Quake 2 were. I still pull those out from time to time.

Once I get a comp to play it I'll probably pick up Q4, but from what you say it doesn't sound that good.

Is there a demo around? I'd like to see some of Q4 though I'm not really in for buying it. Just to see what I'll miss - or not miss.

I posted my thoughts a couple days back in the recently played thread, so I'll just c+p...

I jut played Quake 4 for a few minutes, and here's my initial impression...

I kinda like it, but I can't help but think my opinion of it is kinda skewed after playing FEAR. In that game, the combat was incredibly tense, unpredictable and exciting, and in Quake 4 the combat amounts to little more than running through corridors and shooting things that run at you. There's no real reason to crouch behind cover, no leaning around corners...it all feels very tactless for a game that puts focus on teams fighting other teams.

It's that very lack of tactical gameplay that makes the whole team-orientated aspect of the game seem very one-dimensional...the only reason you need team mates is because you can't kill all the enemies on screen by yourself; there's no reason to fall back on team mates besides extra firepower, so you can mow down wave after wave of enemy grunt that occasionally side steps and runs at you. Sure, thre are medics, but I didn't feel the need to take advantage of them. It's just kinda boring. After seeing what FEAR could do with squad AI, it all felt very deflated and one dimensional in Q4. It doesn't seem as repetitive as Doom 3's combat system, but it certianly lacks the tension and excitment D3 created sometimes.

Sure it's loud and pretty, but it doesn't have the same emotional bond Doom 3 created (which, like it or loathe it, had a great immersive atmosphere); the combination of silly music, over the top explosions, mindless enemies and all the ripping off of Aliens (as well as the stereotypical baddass marine types...must all commander-types have that same voice? must the black guy always swear? must the non-caucasian marines have a RREEEALLYY strong accent?) really distanced me from what was going on around me; I just didn't care, and had little reason to continue playing other than to see the next good looking set piece.

So, get it because it's loud and pretty; that's about all I can say at this point. Everything else bored me somewhat. Perhaps things pick up later on, but this is what I think so far (I'm still early in the game); not the best first impressions.

? quoting Yak_Fighter
And seriously, the hovertank section was probably the worst thing I have played in ages.

I played through that bit yesterday actually and I thought that myself. The big red spiders kill outright with one missile, yet no other enemies can barely even scratch you.

Additionally, I don't like the way all the enemies do the Doom3 trick of vapourising when they die; I've been playing for several hours and I still don't even know what the enemies look like. Some have red pants, others are all in black and there are a few more variants, yet beyond that I don't know the details since by the time I reach downed enemies they've already vapourised.

Seems like a lot of people are putting the boot into Quake 4, but hey, after Quakes 1 & 2 the bar is high and we expect to be impressed.

Well I like it, some one will make a mod to turn the vaporizing off like they did with doom3. The only problem is that in Doom3 the monsters that died in doors kept the doors opening and closing. BUT I noticed that monsters in doors in Quake 4 got crushed so that may not be a problem.

Well, before you completely write us off on one person's opinion, remember that this was his reason for buying the game in the first place:

? quote:
I might buy Q4 just so that I can say I have played the game when I really stick it to people. Although I do like my money and wasting 50 bucks on a game that I know will be a typical Raven mediocre snoozefest doesn't seem too appealing, especially when I can buy a real game like AoE3 or Civ4.

No one will ever please everyone with a game, especially a franchise sequel, but anyone going into a game with that outlook is wasting their time and money because no amount of quality could possibly make up for the terrible expectations already existing. Hell, Yak, you let us off easy - that was far more positive than I expected it would be! :P

Indeed, congrats and good job to you and everyone else who worked on the game. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. Did you do any of the mapping for the Nexus? I really like the way that place looks.

I just realized what your avatar is KFS, very nifty. I had been wondering what it was for a while.

I finished it earlyer today having not been able to play it since Friday *shakes fist* damn college. I really enjoyed it havent had the chance to have a good game on multiplayer yet though as Guild wars has all my time there atm but I did enjoy the little game I had.

Only one slight problem with it as far as I can see at the min and thats not enough people were playing online as most of the servers in the list were empty.
