I was just pissed off this morning. My first patient was a twelve-year old boy whom I've seen a month ago. His mother brought him back because she said the medicine I prescribed didn't work.

Upon further inquiry, I found out that he hasn't been using the medication at all. The mother said "He doesn't like it, so he stopped."

How can she say that the med doesn't work when her son doesn't even take the medicine? Crazy bastard.

Heh, that's pretty stupid yeah...

I actually expected something else from this thread, and it made me think about what a friend of mine said yesterday. He has leukemia and had his first cure some weeks ago. He doesn't like doctors too much either, but that's because a doctor means something is happening and it stresses him. They're too concise.
Now I can understand a doctor in such department needs to be concise as a lot happens there and these are no light diseases, so luckily the nurses are more personal.
Hmm, just what this thread title made me think about...

Not all doctors are curt and impersonal. I've been visiting a terrific ENT. He's like 70, but he seems so young and within minutes of meeting this guy you get the feeling that you can trust him to take care of anything. He's very warm and just exudes a feeling of capability.

everyone loves to have a doctor that they can trust. isn't this one of the most friendly looking docs that you've ever seen. almost reminds you of that old frayed teddy bear that you never had as a child......

Yeah, for a patient it's best to have a doctor that is personal and trustable. From a doctors point of view, I think it can be hard to be that when sometimes patiens die. I admire those that can be personal, it sounds like a hard job to me.

Well... I really dont understand people who works like that. How can she even say that the medicine doesnt work if the boy had'nt taken it?

I mean.... Is there a logical explanation for this behaviour? I sure as hell can't find one.

Satchmo, did you ask how the hell she could say it didnt work?

I didn't state the obvious, because I think the parent would consider that insulting. Instead, I said that the medication doesn't work unless he takes it every day. She can figure out what I was trying to say.

I consider myself a personable doctor. I think most pediatricians are quite friendly, compared to other specialties. I play with my patients, I keep up with the latest cartoons, and I chat about video games with my teenage patients. It's amazing how fast they open up once I start discussing Halo or Counter-Strike. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

I think it's possible to be warm and cuddly and professional at the same time.

P.S. One of my patients said something very funny this morning. He's a three year old who said that he's got puppies in his tummy. I think he's trying to say that he's got cramps, but I almost burst out laughing when he said that.

Man, I love my job.

shame we dont have all that many pleasant doctors in this country. I got a call this morning that my grandad is suffering with pneumonia & his sons&daughters have been asked to go to him immediately today, I fear the worst.

Even worse than that, I no longer live in london so I havent got a chance of seeing him at his possible last hours. I never actually met him in person, which I am ashamed about tbh, he would always send me postcards about his RAF days.

Funny how life can deal you a s**tty hand all of a sudden, if anyone else has refrained from meeting grandparents, do it now tbh.

That reminds me. I was in car crash with 2 buddies of mine (as in we were parked on the sidewalk and another car lost control and slammed in our side at a speed of about 50km/h). "Fortunately" we only ended-up with bruises. And so did the responsible driver...initially (he was later introduced to my bud's army-shovel). I, however, who had been standing closest to the battered side, had a deep and fairly long cut on my left arm that was bleeding all over the place. I rushed to a nearby hospital and went straight to the emergency desk. The nurse there was busy reading some "important" papers (bills, as far as I could tell). I told her I had an emergency and pointed at my arm. Without even raising her head, the b*tch told me to wait a moment. So I did, and when that moment was over I threw my arm in spite of the pain on her papers, splattering them with blood, and informed her that if she didn't do something soon, I would find myself forced to break my healthy arm fisting her to death. God I hate nurses. Anyway, she took me a dermatologist while constantly bitching about irresponsible people getting hurt. The doctor was OK, though. He later told me that the nurse I just met was, indeed, a b*tch.

What about the other end of the spectrum Doctor?

Whatever happened to paying for services rendered?

I went to the doctor recently. She poked, prodded, caused me intense pain and said "There is nothing I can do until it gets worse"

I went home and took care of the problem myself.

I received a bill last week. $500.00 bucks.

This is the main reason why so many people do not go to any doctors when they need to any longer. Almost everyone I know refuses because they are sure the doctor will charge them even if nothing at all is accomplished.

Doctors have a bad reputation but mostly its self imposed.

There is no history until something happens, then there is.

i went to the hospital last week to have a biopsy done on a lump on my nipple. there were two types of sample taken. the first was with no anasthetic, as it gives cleaner results or something.

the procedure involved a 5cm needle being inserted to its full deapth, entering at the side of the nipple, and going all the way under to its center. then it was wiggled around quite a lot. not just a little. i was actually surprise my nipple didn't fall off. then i burst out laughing. a strange thing to do, no doubt, but richard harris getting hung by his nipples in the film 'a man called horse' was all i could think about. it was too sureal, just lying there getting some nipple torture from this really hot woman. i managed to say 'a man called horse' before descending into laughter again, and the student in the room burst out laughing too. the hot doc chic had to have it explained. she said that i was the only person she had ever seen laughing while getting this done to them. not surprising, really.

i don't know if i'd have been as merry if it was a wrinkly old male doc that was doing it, and that makes me wonder. it's not that i found it 'fun' in any way that i'd like to repeat, but it was fun to have her do it, if it needed done, sort of thing.
