Thoughts?

It's pretty good, as long as you weren't expecting more than a gorgeous 20 minute Combine fight. I like the commentary system - Robin Walker's voice is completely different than what I imagined.

Only problem I've had is the game locking up after a while with a "memory could not be read" error. Beware!

Alright. I just finished. I was expecting MUCH more. But... that's my life with HL2 i suppose...

The point of "Lost Coast" isn't the gameplay. It's a technological demo that happens to have some combat. In fact, I wasn't expecting any fighting at all. I was just interested in the scenary and checking out the new engine. To be honest, I was a bit annoyed by the combine.

I very much enjoy the commentary. I found them very informative, and they really enhance my appreciation for the technical aspect of the rendering process.

I took some screenshots. As far as the aesthetics, I was actually expecting a bit more from Valve. The water looks even more gorgeous, but I think some textures do not work well with HDR. And the distant fog effect is not perfected yet.

Overall, I was quite thrilled. I am just glad that my machine could handle the engine. I was given a warning that my specs weren't up to par, but luckily the game ran without a hitch.

Since I lack the shaders and such to use HDR ... period. I thought it was okay.

Wish I had the money to do an upgrade.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

As free 'lost levels' go this doesn't hold a candle to Uplink. Still, it's cool <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

I ran it on my normal settings and got the same frames as I do while running regular HL2. Listening to the comentaries was what I liked the most (level design terms - Verticle combat, arena, and puzzles =P).

I enjoyed it very much, especially the commentary! The ones about game concept rather than technology give people (particularly mappers, aspiring developers, etc) some insight into what goes into making single player games and maps fun. Thats a good thing. This has even inspired me to make a single player map or maybe even a series of maps for HL2!

I say bravo! I think it was quite well done for what it is, a tech demo. I think people will get POed at Valve for taking sooooo long on something sooooo short and *stupid*. But then again thats the typical reaction of a lot of gamers (especially the vocal 12-year-olds) to ANYTHING Valve does.

Just downloading now. For some reason, my computer seems to think that an Athlon 64-bit 3000+ is below 2.2GHz, and so is too slow for the game...

I hope to prove it wrong. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

It thinks my Sempron 2500+ is anywhere from 1.8 to 4 ghz... I've always wondered why.

Havent downloaded it yet, probably not much point if its just a tech demo. My video card probably couldnt keep up anyway.

Just played it - impressive stuff. The final comnment said that it was a test to see if the community liked this sort of stuff (i.e. commentary on development), so I hope we get more of this in the future.

And it seems I proved it very wrong in terms of specs...

Well after 5 crashes I managed to get through it. It was stunning, it had eye candy!

Scripts were quite good but they didn't amaze me like the Canals scripting!
There were a few bugs but I can ignore them because they did work hard on it.
I decided to take pics for those who can't play it yet...I will zip it because some people don't want to spoil it.

www.websamba.com/habboi/lostcoast.zip

I had to delete dedication and de_boshi to save room but here are shots of pretty much everything on full graphics.
People said it was too short but I found it quite entertaining and lasted me 30 mins, they just rush things like this and expect more...

All in all it was beautiful, entertaining and I hope they make more...Maps like these make me realise why I map, cause you can make eye candy like that if you try hard enough. Just looking at it again makes me want to map something spectacular.

Did anyone else seem to have a sort of god-mode while playing this? I wouldn't take damage from the combine or anything the entire level. Possibly a glitch? I didn't set it that way I swear! :P

If you have the commentary on then you don't take damage. I played it through twice - once without commentary and once with. It's an enjoyable diversion for 20 minutes or whatever, a lovely demonstration of HDR, and the commentary is a neat feature that I'd love to see in more things. All in all, it's nothing amazing but good for what it is. GG valve.
