Ever make a really stupid mistake when you were very tired?
Well last night i did!
For some un-known reason CS:S/HL2 didn't want to boot, giving some
strange error like 'Steam.exe - Entry Point Not Found'. So after an
hour or so trying out different things and trawling the forums i
decided to re-install Steam.
What I didn't realise after re-installing that for some reason all my
mapping files had been deleted. I can't understand why it would
overwrite/delete custom files?
Anyway i've lost my map i've been working on for 6 months. I did have a
back-up but its very old. (I guess its my fought for not backing up
this file on a regular basis.) Using an a file recovery program i
managed to retrieve some of the original files but they are corrupted
and cant be opened.
I just hope I can salvage something.

oh my gosh. That's horrible.
I wish you all the best for your salvation.
But let me tell you one thing. It's not your fault. I would not have expected this either. This is just crazy... And probably another reason why I do not an hopfully never will map with steam....
take care

Well luckily things turned out ok, I think?
Last night I happened up a certain rival website (which i wont mention) which mentioned a fix. One of the site's owners offered a service to fix corrupted maps. I sent the file to him about 9:20 and at 11:20 he had fixed it and sent it back. I'm at work so I don't know what the extent of damage has been done. All that matters is the basic shell is intact. The scale and some of the architecture took very long to do. I'll let you know how it went 2moro.

Good luck to you man. I feel for you.
Something similar happened to me before, but the extent of the damage wasn't nearly as bad. I was working on my Justice map one morning, and when it was almost lunch time, the monitor just blacked out suddenly. The computer turned off too. It turned out to be a power outage in the city.
Usually, I save the map every five to ten minutes in Hammer, but that morning, I was so focused on putting those models in the map that I neglected to save anything. So I lost everything I did for about four hours.
Ever since that incident, I press Ctrl-S every five minutes. In addition, I save five or six copies of my map on different computers, directories, and disk drives. I even upload it up to various web storage services.
I hope everything works out for you, and I am looking forward to see the final product.

Bummer man, losing work is never fun.
Glad you posted about it though, personally I'll look out for that in the future, and I'll be sure to backup my stuff out of the steam folders.
Let us know how it turns out.

You think that is obsessive? I have one model im working on with 50+ save files. I even save in save's when there is nothing to be saved from not saving.

It's just occurred to me that the title of this thread sounds like what Darth Vader said when he found out that he killed Padme.

Ha ha.

That sucks. Glad you could recover it though. That is strange ... it shouldn't have done that unless it deletes all the local content when re-installing, which it didn't used to do.

But he didn't. It was just made up so Darth Vader could become real evil.

I know, but I wonder whether Anakin ever found out the truth about Padme's death.
Even though he didn't kill her, he indirectly killed her because he turned to the Dark Side. Padme didn't want to live after that.
She thought "My true love is now this ugly prick who works for this guy who is even uglier."

My wife suffered the same fate this morning, when she realized that she
had overwritten her whole day's work yesterday by backing up the wrong
folder.
She hasn't stopped screaming yet.
