I think it comes down to the fact that the people who make lots of killbox type maps are, for lack of a better word, morons.

Does that imply they were once 1337, and they've just recently become a moron?
And considering the different grades of stupidity, shall we refer to them as "idiots" rather than "morons". Calling them morons may be giving them too much credit.

In 1910, Henry H. Goddard proposed three categories for the "feeble-minded" based on IQ scores: moron (IQ of 51-70), imbecile (IQ of 26-50), and idiot (IQ of 0-25). This taxonomy was the standard of intelligence research for decades.

I'd rather be called mentally retarded than a moron TBH.

However, if those guys are having fun with their silly unlit maps, let them have it. It's a bit sad graphics don't say a thing to them. Then again, the game industry is a bit sad since graphics mean too much to them, or so it seems...

Yeah, but these maps aren't any fun either.

I believe it's their inability to discern the difference between an official map and their full-bright killbox. I think some people are just not very observant, and they don't know any better.
That, and also the exhilarating thrill when you made your first map make you just want to share your little virtual world withe the rest of the real world. It's comparable to a five-year-old making his first doodle and wanting to post it on the refrigerator to display his masterpiece.
The abundance of killboxes out there also helps lowering the mapping standard and making other players condone such low-quality maps.

I think that's a big part of it.
Also, I think it's because these "mappers" are surrounded by people who tell them how cool their maps are. For anyone who hasn't mapped, the idea of creating anything playable is pretty impressive. I mean, I created an aim map for a friend and he was going nuts over it but I was like... I can't believe I'm doing this. Travesty!

It's not fair either, that serious mappers toil over layout and detail for many hours just to have people say "this map sucks, lets go play <insert killbox here>," a map that could have been made in 20 minutes. At least for me, it can be discouraging at times.

If my map gets a compliment from a respectable fellow mapper (even a small one), I am very satisfied.

I have not read this entire thread yet but one thing I think needs cautioning on. Try not to flame the other site in such a way as to incite retaliatory responses if you can help it. If the maps are truly that bad, then so are most probably the members and they will have no compulsion against bringing the fight to our doors.
I have probably visited at least as many sites as the average user here and one thing is consistent about them all. No one likes being compared to another site no matter how strong the pro's and con's for doing so.
This is not a complaint. Its more just simple advice gleaned over many years of online time.
Please feel free to ignore this post if someone has already mentioned this point.

But what I can't fathom is why do people download these crappy maps? Sometimes I go through the collection trying to find the most terrible map I can possibly find. I ran into this one today, but then there are other maps like this one that is actually well-liked by some.
I just don't get it.

I can understand the sensation of pride a mapper has when he creates something, but why people insist on playing these is beyond my understanding.
