The only bad thing is: you have to use itunes. Period. There is no way around it. Video is a bit of a pain the ass as I understand it.
Personally, I'd get a pocket PC, they're generally about $100 USD more, but so much more functional (but that also includes software problems
Of course, an iPod can do all this too ... just takes some programming. I saw some guy hook an IR adapter to his iPod and programmed a remote into it. So he could like control TVs and stuff. (Pocket PCs generally have BlueTooth and IR built in)
Anyway, there's nothing wrong with an iPod. Go down to a mac store, or best buy and ask to see one of the iPod videos (Ask if they have a working demo). I know, if you went to a mac store they'd definitely have it, but they're usually about $50 more
Also, aim at spending $300 (USD) (~$357 CAD), I think that's where the "video"s start. And normal iPods are that much too ... unless you get one with a really small HDD (I believe you can only get lower than 20GB online, most stores don't carry that small)

Pocket PC for the win!!!
Not only can you listen to actual mp3 files witohut having to use the proprietary GAYtunes software, you can watch videos, post on snarkpit, use IRC, and play games. Pretty much anything a PC does except high-quality games like HL2 and DOOM3. Which your iPod would never even DREAM of doing.
OR, if you like utter crap and want to be stuck with proprietary technology and lose out on a bunch of money you could get iPod.
iPod for the lose.

iPods are, at least here, priced at $100 more than other playes, some of which are more functional (eg. iRiver).
iTunes is horrid.
Don't get an iPod, unless of course youre willing to spend a hundred dollars to be cool.

I mean... I don't know if they have any apple stores near you, but if they do, just take a trip downtown and check out different models until you find one you'd like.

Why do you like iTunes, when any other mp3 player on the market today will show up as a removable storage device (like a USB key)?

I've set my eyes on a few other MP3 players, but I just love the iPod. The whole interface is so much better then any other I've seen around.
I do'nt want to get a pocket PC. My laptop does all the jobs I need in a computer, but I want to have a quality mp3 player for when I'm out and bout.
I can't get to Best BUy today or tomorrow, but hopefully Friday I'll get down there.
OH, and iPod videos can doa all the things a normal iPod can, right?

A Pocket PC would do what I want it to: play Xvid and Divx. AND emulators! That's why I would get one. However, I can understand just wanting music playback and some limited software capabilities (although, there's a slew of programs for iPods. I saw one that allows you to upload maps you download through google and mapquest. Making a database on your iPod)

THe Future Shop and Best Buy near me still have 5 or 6 mini's left. ANd I think they look okay....
And about iTunes. I like it. The ability to just download albums is pretty kick ass.

10 bucks for an album that you can (legally) get instantly is a pretty good deal.

I have a Creative MuVo TX FM. I love it.
It has more features than the iPod mini, the same ammount of memory, and it cost less. The only problem I've had with it since I got it six moths ago is that I had to do a firmware upgrade. No big deal.

They aren?t really good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one tumbles down the stairs.

The Zen Micro looks nice and works reasonably well, especially if you upgrade the firmware, but considering it's more expensive that some players which have more features, I'm regretting getting one.
As much as I don't like following the flock, I'd consider getting an iPod next time.
