So, I'm in the market for an iPod, and I"m leaning towards the Mini. The regular is too bulky for me, and I've heard bad stories of nano's breaking and such.

Anyone have any suggestions before I go blow a couple hundred bucks?

There's nothing wrong with iPod. I would suggest, if any, the video ipod. It's not as big as the older ones and it's for sale ... they shut down production on minis. Yes, nanos are ridiculously small. But, the video ones are a good size ... it's smaller than your hand in any case.

The only bad thing is: you have to use itunes. Period. There is no way around it. Video is a bit of a pain the ass as I understand it.

Personally, I'd get a pocket PC, they're generally about $100 USD more, but so much more functional (but that also includes software problems smiley. They're generally the same size, the entire screen is touch sensitive PLUS is recognizes all normal codecs (and you can load new ones). (Some are even more, but they have things like GPS ...)

Of course, an iPod can do all this too ... just takes some programming. I saw some guy hook an IR adapter to his iPod and programmed a remote into it. So he could like control TVs and stuff. (Pocket PCs generally have BlueTooth and IR built in)

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with an iPod. Go down to a mac store, or best buy and ask to see one of the iPod videos (Ask if they have a working demo). I know, if you went to a mac store they'd definitely have it, but they're usually about $50 more <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

Also, aim at spending $300 (USD) (~$357 CAD), I think that's where the "video"s start. And normal iPods are that much too ... unless you get one with a really small HDD (I believe you can only get lower than 20GB online, most stores don't carry that small)

Pocket PC for the win!!!

Not only can you listen to actual mp3 files witohut having to use the proprietary GAYtunes software, you can watch videos, post on snarkpit, use IRC, and play games. Pretty much anything a PC does except high-quality games like HL2 and DOOM3. Which your iPod would never even DREAM of doing.

OR, if you like utter crap and want to be stuck with proprietary technology and lose out on a bunch of money you could get iPod.

iPod for the lose.

iPods are, at least here, priced at $100 more than other playes, some of which are more functional (eg. iRiver).

iTunes is horrid.

Don't get an iPod, unless of course youre willing to spend a hundred dollars to be cool.

Not even to be cool. Just to have your shadow move independantly from you like the iPod commercials and Peter Pan...

I have a third generation iPod and despite its s**tty s**tty battery life (~4 hours) I'm happy with it. I like iTunes as well, even though its pretty slow.

I mean... I don't know if they have any apple stores near you, but if they do, just take a trip downtown and check out different models until you find one you'd like.

Why do you like iTunes, when any other mp3 player on the market today will show up as a removable storage device (like a USB key)?

I just like the automatic syncing, the dynamic playlists, the rating system, the play counts, the iTunes music store, and the fact that I can access around 30 different computers that are in the dorm via the iTunes network.

Well, I'm leaning towards the Mini because they stopped producing them, they're a bit cheaper where I am.

I've set my eyes on a few other MP3 players, but I just love the iPod. The whole interface is so much better then any other I've seen around.

I do'nt want to get a pocket PC. My laptop does all the jobs I need in a computer, but I want to have a quality mp3 player for when I'm out and bout.

I can't get to Best BUy today or tomorrow, but hopefully Friday I'll get down there.

OH, and iPod videos can doa all the things a normal iPod can, right?

Right. It just has the addition of video and better specs, I believe. They also have larger screens. I think. They 'look' just like the other iPods though. And, dude, Minis are ugly. Very ugly, actually. BestBuy doesn't sell them anymore either. No one does. You'd have to buy them online somewhere.

A Pocket PC would do what I want it to: play Xvid and Divx. AND emulators! That's why I would get one. However, I can understand just wanting music playback and some limited software capabilities (although, there's a slew of programs for iPods. I saw one that allows you to upload maps you download through google and mapquest. Making a database on your iPod)

Mini's are good if you want to strap them to your bicep when you go running or go lifting. Just make sure you get a decent color, but I do agree with Crono overall... they don't look too hot.

Cost is another factor. I"m kinda.. you know... not high on money.

THe Future Shop and Best Buy near me still have 5 or 6 mini's left. ANd I think they look okay....

And about iTunes. I like it. The ability to just download albums is pretty kick ass.

Seriously, that's my favorite feature.

10 bucks for an album that you can (legally) get instantly is a pretty good deal.

I personally have an m:robe, but Olympus is getting out of the media player market. If anything I'd recommend a Creative Zen Micro or an iRiver over an iPod, it's just an overpriced consumer whore product. Pay for the fashion statement if you believe in it, or save money and get a better functioning product. For me the stupid white 'status' headphones are tacky and a negative. Bonus for me anyway though since I can't use earbuds, I've never found a pair that stays in my ears.

I have a Creative MuVo TX FM. I love it.

It has more features than the iPod mini, the same ammount of memory, and it cost less. The only problem I've had with it since I got it six moths ago is that I had to do a firmware upgrade. No big deal.

I had a Zen Micro, dropped it accidentally, and it stopped working all together. After about a week of e-mailing tech support they finally established it needed to be sent in for repair/replacement, but the warranty was void because I'd dropped it. Subsequently, any repair/replacement was going to cost in the region of ?80.

The Zen Micro looks nice and works reasonably well, especially if you upgrade the firmware, but considering it's more expensive that some players which have more features, I'm regretting getting one.

As much as I don't like following the flock, I'd consider getting an iPod next time.

There probably isnt really anything wrong with iPods but I bought a Creative Zen Touch because everyone had iPods, and at the time all the reviews were saying iPods has rubbish battery life and all that, and Creative devices gave better sound quality. Id certainly recommend checking out a Creative device as well as the iPod range.

Hello there.
