Steam Update b0rk the Hammer

I noticed the huge CS:S and Hammer update today. It includes the de_nuke map (with HDR lighting) and lots of bug fixes.

But when I tried to fire up Hammer, all I got was this fatal error message:

"Extra App ID set to 211, but no SteamAppId."

And Hammer closes immediately after I click on "OK".

Anyone else having this problem? I already reset the game configurations and refreshed SDK content, but nothing helped. I restarted Steam also, but the problem persisted.

How can I solve this problem?

dont know if this will do it, but occasionaly you need to fire up whatever game you have just had updated to get the fgd "goosed" and going.....ive had nothing but problems since the release of the dods fgd, and the beta sdk....yes i know its a beta....but some of this stuff is 101.....

I get the same problem, and running the game before hammer doesnt fix it.

Presumably this is Valves problem, and theyll either give us a workaround or an update to fix it as soon as theyre aware of it. I found quite a few people complaining of this on steampowered, but no solutions.

In that case, I'm not restarting steam until I hear good news from you guys.

Someone at interlopers claims "Refreshing SDK content and launching beta fixes this."

Even the CS:S engine is unstable now. I just had it freeze on me.

I played de_nuke with HDR lighting on. The HDR lighting doesn't add much to the gameplay, except for dragging the framerates. The map is also extremely large, which doesn't help with performance. It's a pain to get from one Bombsite to another, because the place is freaking huge.

However, I do like the little attention to detail, like the highway with cars zooming by near the CT spawn. The bots don't seem any smarter than before the update, however, despite what Valve claimed.

Beta SDK Hammer loads up fine on my PC, I've been using the beta for several days, so I didn't have to refresh anything. Valve seems to break something with every recent update. I'm about to try de_nuke out, good luck to all you poor souls without Hammer, I hope the beta thing works for people.

Given what just happened, I'm not going to trust anything 'beta' from Valve, unless its not fixed by monday.

Satch, CS:S doesnt seem unstable for me. Maybe its the map, I havent played it. Maybe its HDR, I havent turned it on in CS. In fact, its probably HDR. I've been playing a non-HDR map all afternoon with no ill effects.

Hey hey now, Nuke is a remake of an old favourite, ain't nothing wrong with map's gameplay my friend :P I can't say I'm overly happy with the "reimagination" of it's setting however - while it makes a little more sense with it's new surroundings, I vastly preferred it being out in some canyons to some generic industrial estate. Lovely attention to detail yes, but it's just such a generic theme.

Very bad news about the hammer problem, hope that is rectified ASAP. The mappers often seem to get the rough end of the stick from Valve these days, with game updates bringing in problems for hammer and requiring later fixes.

Satch, if HDR is hurting performance and you don't care about it, then just turn it off! some people like it, there is no point complaining about a new graphical feature when it isn't mandatory :P While the freeze you had is possibly to do with the update, there's little reason to assume it - it's not like that's the first time the source engine has crashed after all <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

I worry about those poor coders as well, every single update to the source engine means a neccessary change in their code. There was an update in October I think, and no mods made before then work any more <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

Satch, did you see/try: ""Refreshing SDK content and launching beta fixes this."

Someone at interlopers claimed that... does it fix your problem?

I get this error too. And I'm getting sick of reinstalling hammer after every major update. I'm switching to permanent offline mode as soon as I get hammer stable again.

Note: refreshing the sdk content and running the beta sdk did nothing for me.

i uninstalled the beta a few days ago, mainly because it started to freeze when i tried to open the map i'm working on, but also because i don't like the model selector at all, and the whole program just has too many little faults.

i don't play cs:s, but dod:s had an update this week, and i've had no problems from it.

HDR in a multi-player shooter where every split second can mean life or death is just plain silly. there's no point in standing around blinking while your eyes get used to the light, just so you can take a headshot from the guy you couldn't see. pretty for pretties sake is fine, but if it puts you at a disadvantage because it occasionally blinds you and constantly attacks your framerates, then why bother?

I get the same error as well.

Does everyone else have to sit around waiting for the SDK to update everytime you load the beta SDK? I do and it pisses me off, always starting from 82% and taking 10-15 minutes.

I've decided to just leave my computer and Steam on all the time, so I don't have to deal with this mess.

About mappers getting the rough end is very true! Gone are the days of highly skilled dedicated mappers who create massive and highly impressive mods, in are the days of 11 year old L337 nubs who create 5 minute full-bright killboxes <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

I blame the update because the Source engine (all the games) rarely crashed on me. I think it has happened only twice in a year. Since the update last night, it had crashed twice in two hours. I believe the update has something to do with it.

I didn't know de_nuke is a remake, but I can predict that it won't ever get as popular as de_dust2 or cs_office.

HDR is suitable for single-player campaigns. It's unnecessary for multiplayer arenas.

de_nuke has always been pretty popular with leagues, and I would say that it's more suitable for league play than cs_office, simply because its bomb/defuse and not hostage/rescue. As far as pub popularity goes, who knows. Pubs are fickle.

While at home I got to play DOD:S with HDR and it was awesome. I really liked it, and just made everything look so much better. I could run 40-60 fps, so it was decent, but if the performance were lower I definitely wouldn't have hesitated to turn it off.

What is HDR? Some sort of lighting effect?
