HDR is suitable for single-player campaigns. It's unnecessary for multiplayer arenas.

Unnecessary yes, but most graphical effects are unnecessary. I play multiplayer games with HDR simply because I think it looks nice. I haven't felt it's damaged my gameplay, and while it doesn't really do anything to improve it either, I'm glad it's there for the added eye candy. It might give you a slight disadvantage but I've yet to feel I've been killed due to having it on, and I don't really take online gaming seriously enough to feel the need to maximise my advantages. I can definately see why people would want it for for serious matches and the like, but that's not me, so I'll keep it on <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Oh and if it crashed twice in one evening and very rarely in the past, I guess that sounds like the update caused it. I've had hundreds of crashes from source engine games, mostly due to switching between hammer and source but not exclusively, hence my comment about it hardly being the first time <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

for crying out loud you would expect them to test this before release.

I think Valve is focusing on getting the beta Hammer to work right that they neglected to test the regular standard Hammer.

HDR is high dynamic range lighting. Read up on topics related to the "Lost Coast".

My hammer is gimped to the max with the same problem "Extra App ID set to 211, but no SteamAppId." I found where the .txt that involves the extra app ID and SteamAppId but i have no idea what it means, and therefore wont mess with it. If anyone out there thinks they know what to do, the file is steamappsACCOUNTNAMEsourcesdklaunchergameinfo.txt {EDIT} here are the contents of the file, and also i found the sdk target includes the -applaunch 211 without any other app referenced, this could also mean somthing. I'm a noob at all this coding stuff so i'm just gonna post any info that references the sdk's gameinfo.txt, since i figure more info can't be hurting the problem, but too little may be the difference between a solution and no solution

Code:

"GameInfo"
{
FileSystem
{
SteamAppId 220 // This will mount all the GCFs we need (240=CS:S, 220=HL2).
ToolsAppId 211 // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materialsdebug, materialseditor, etc.

//
// The code that loads this file automatically does a few things here:
//
// 1. For each "Game" search path, it adds a "GameBin" path, in <dir>bin
// 2. For each "Game" search path, it adds another "Game" path in front of it with _<langage> at the end.
// For example: c:hl2cstrike on a french machine would get a c:hl2cstrike_french path added to it.
// 3. For the first "Game" search path, it adds a search path called "MOD".
// 4. For the first "Game" search path, it adds a search path called "DEFAULT_WRITE_PATH".
//

//
// Search paths are relative to the base directory, which is where hl2.exe is found.
//
// |gameinfo_path| points at the directory where gameinfo.txt is.
// We always want to mount that directory relative to gameinfo.txt, so
// people can mount stuff in c:mymod, and the main game resources are in
// someplace like c:program filesvalvesteamsteamapps<username>half-life 2.
//
SearchPaths
{
Game |gameinfo_path|.
Game hl2
}
}
}

Installing the beta sdk did it for me. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

Personally, I believe the problem arose because CS:S engine was updated to support HDR lighting, and it made the standard Hammer (non-beta) not recognize the CS:S as a valid installed game for the account.

Don't know, but it's my guess.

Did you say you were using the old hammer before? Because that's obviously the problem. Update to the beta and it should work. It seems they took out support for those older sdk tools.

I don't like some of the changes in the beta hammer (which actually runs).

The numbers on the grid are disgusting. The selection boxes are pain in the ass to drag now. Things just feel more awkward.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

So all I have to do is add "-beta sdk" in the Steam command line? I'll try that.

Thanks.

Besides using the beta SDK, this is another work-around, thanks to Zombieloff from TWHL.

It took them one day to fix the error. It's still pretty fast.

I just wish they had tested it before they released the code for the last update.

I think the remade nuke looks very nice in spite of the fact that it's a prop orgy.

As for updating, check-out properties->updates by right-clicking on source sdk.

At least there are very very few physics props (I count four). It's a good map, I like it.

I noticed the huge CS:S and Hammer update today.

How huge?

I am afraid to even turn steam on.

I do have a question though, if you never plan on playing online again (my dialup) is it necessary to ever update?

There is no history until something happens, then there is.

it looks bigger than is, because it shows all games being updated from around 95%, which is probably only one engine update being applied to all the games.

you wouldn't need to update anything ever again, and you'd still be able to play what's already on your comp. you might even get away with playing new maps for a while, but eventually there would be compatability issues.
