Ok so here's my tragedy.
I start my computer this morning and, after a brief loading, I open firefox to
see what was new over at the pit (this place is addictive, lemme tell ya') .
After browsing for a while my attention is caught by the little steam icon on
the taskbar. I notice that it was updating. Curious, I bring the steam window
forward and notice that the item being updated was the SDK. I go white. I
clearly recalled switching the auto-update function off. I could also remember,
just as clearly, that this usually had no effect what-so-ever. Thanks to my
incredible self-control, I manage to refrain myself from ripping the
internet-cable to shreds. I wait, and after a few minutes it finishes updating.
Fearing the worst, I click on Hammer. I?m greeted by a screen saying that
"the specified file cannot be found". No reaction. I was used, after
all, to putting-up with this kind of bullcrap after every single update VALVe
pushed out the door. I refresh the SDK content, and after a few minutes of "copying
files, please wait", I, once again, attempt to run hammer. Surprise,
surprise! Error 211 bla bla bla. THIS after managing to get it to work the day
before.
I swear, I'm going to mail valve a bomb as soon as I find a big enough
envelope.

Sorry for the double post, but it looks like the problem is quite widespread:

There's various solutions offered to this problem over at the DoD
Mapping Forums, although they don't seem to be 100% guaranteed to work
or free of pitfalls.

I just got everything updated and got that annoying "error". Anyway, the removing of "ToolsAppId" entry in whatever gameinfo.txt should work. As said in one of those links though, you can only work on brushes, no models. (since it is in the 211 ID)
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

For some reason the SDK insists on updating daily. After finishing I'm
forced to refresh the SDK content or else I get the missing APP error.
After the refresh I get the 211 error and have to shut down steam and
then restart it as to redownload the beta SDK, all this in the context
of having switched auto-update off. And to think I actually said *good* things about steam and valve in the recent past.

I did that too, but for quake 4, its really really hard, to get used to it ofcourse, i tried so hard, the controls are just crazy...The only thing i enjoyed that it had many cooler features, the common one is rendering the map while you are in the editor, really cool...

for anyone that started using the buggy beta and wants to convert back, remember to 'update sdk content', or it won't be able to find hammer.

You mean, the regular version of Hammer (non-beta) is working perfectly now? I'll have to try that when I get home.

I can get the camera to render only in 3D Lightmapped Grid. The only flaw with it is that I can't SEE MY FREAKING TEXTURES!111`~~~1.

They are aware of this problem. Check the FAQ's over at the VERC. They fixed the steamapp error and subsequently shut down many peoples graphics, including mine. I have already completely deleted and re-installed steam this morning, but have not started the editor yet, as I have too much to do to devote a whole day to seeing if Valve got their act together.

Whatever happened to just Valve issuing a recall patch, that just
resets everything? In this case, Valve's just going dig
themselves a nice little grave by the time they actually fix
everything...

I'm assuming this was the tiny patch issued earlier. I just rebooted and the SDK started updating again (a fairly hefty patch too by the looks of things - starting at 84%). Maybe they fixed it...
I've resorted to the beta SDK btw.

So, is it fixed now?
Why don't they issue an update news at steampowered?
Or is Valve just too embarassed at admitting such a huge mistake?

I'm guessing that theres been no update. If you stop and restart steam, (at least letely) it re-downloads starting at 84 % everytime, well it does for me anywho.

Ah right. That would explain it. Nevertheless, I don't seem to be having any problems. Is it just the normal SDK or the beta as well?
