It jolts a shock of panic through my body as I learned of it (from a gaming magazine). The graphics quality is low, and the level design process prohibits creativity. Most importantly, it encourages mappers (if you can even call them that) to make boxy maps that lack vertical gameplay. However, this program allows any n00b to churn out a map in less than an hour.
I hope it never becomes popular. The biggest obstacle it faces is that it doesn't generate maps for any existing game engine. Consequently, there isn't an existing audience for the game itself.

No, but there was a thread about a random map generator for HL1. I never understood how it could create a functioning map but I did hear of it.

Boring.
Generic.
Dumbed-down.
Cookie-cutter.
Ugly.
Limited.
I really don't think something like this will catch on. If there was technology in this product that surpassed what was offered right now, perhaps people would buy it... but from what I could tell it looked like level editor that came with Marathon.

I doubt this program will have a bad effect on our Half-Life community. An editor so simplistic is unlikely to interest good mappers, however, its likely to draw away the n00bs who seem unable to read compile logs and figure things out on their own. In any case, I doubt it will become popular.

Imagine if you have never heard of mapping, and you saw this program first. You would think this is a gift from God. And perhaps you would never dip your hands in real mapping, and never realizing your true potential.

One word springs to my mind however. "KILLBOX"
you just described a killbox and look how popular they are. There truly are enough stupid people to make anything popular. ![]()

I dunno... judging from the website it looked like the program would frustrate and scare off anyone who had a serious desire to create something.
You know what it's like? One of those "dress-up" magnet sets... how many times can you dress up "David" before you get bored?
I highly doubt we'll lose any mapping prodigies to this hokum.

Edit: Good point... I hadn't even realized the similarities, but you're right. I described killboxes exactly. The only reason why I don't think you can compare FPS creator to killboxes in HL2 is: killboxes are just s**tty maps made for a great game and a great engine.... whereas things made by FPS Creators looks like s**tty maps made for a s**tty game / engine / whatever this is. The foundation isn't there...

The foundation is "Stupid People"
Seems to be a commodity that is never in short supply.
But, I get your point.

Especially the ceiling texture. The floor isn't bad either.
So, this program is used to pump out FPS games? I bet those games will turn out amazing.
Seriously though, I doubt whatever a program like this one is ever going to be able to create will exceed the real thing, made by people who love doing it. Think about all the ingenious games out there. A program like this can't create something like that.

Hey, I got that magnet from my brother before I left for my honeymoon in Italy.
Currently, he's wearing a t-shirt but with no boxer.

Gah. If that's all this program can do, here's what I have to say:
I can build a better looking Doom map with more realistic lighting. And Doom didn't actually have "light" so to speak.
Honestly: Who are these guys trying to kid? Maybe people who have never really dabled in game development will find it interesting -- kinda like the Genisis3D11 which was what I was first ever introduced to (yup, WorldCraft came afterwards, and it was a God send from that hideous-joke-of-a-map-editor Genisis!)
Edit:

I wanted to show you that because apparently, the website feels that is a screenshot to "pimp off" their editor.
I have the amazing urge to write something very negative about this program, but I've got no idea what to say :x

Unlike proper games and mapping, you cant do any complex archaetecure. Its pretty much like mapping for Doom1. And the graphics are appaling. All the maps end up as linnear boxes with windows. What I dont understand is how they say, "You can make commercial quality games." WTF! From the screenies all the levels have no sense of detail or intrest. Everything is just corridors and rooms. You can have complex details and archaetecture such as in Half-Life. Only bare corridors and monsters.

Check the picture on the right. Disgusting!!
"Create multi-level games (up to 50 levels)"
What if I dont wanna make a game that has levels! What about like Half-Life, or Battlefield 2?

Wtf, it is a sqaure room with repetitve sprites.
" Q: Can I have rooms above other rooms? Or dungeons / cellars?
A: Yes absolutely! You can create levels up to 20 floors height."
Wtf!! So your "map" has to be limited to floors and levels. How bloody boring!!
" Q: What about massive landscapes like in Joint Operations?
A: As much as I'd like to see terrain in there, it's not going to happen for a while. FPS games vary in their inclusion of terrain a lot - Doom3 had none, while Far Cry sort of has it, but it's still an enclosed area, so it's fake in a way. Joint Ops had what we would term as "massive terrain" (hundreds of KM map). Painkiller on the other hand was totally enclosed, but still had lots of outdoor areas. Right now we're concentrating on that "enclosed" type of game. Which means yes you can model full outdoor scenes, you just can't have the player roaming over hills and mountains."
" Q: Can you make cool weapons like those motion detecting bombs from Half Life?
A: Yes. A motion-detecting bomb would be an entity that tracks the distance of the player, triggers an explosion causing player damage, and then destroys itself."

Well, this is the new generation of game desing :X
Gone are the days of skill, dedication and commitment. Gone are the days of hours mapping with skill, learning complex languages, with the result of truly awsome games. All has been replaced with L337 12 year old's making their little monster-flooded killboxes in an hour. It seems to be the same condition with mapping.

Graphics aren't everything. Everyone has to start somewhere. I tried this and deleted it (which I knew would happen when I clicked Download), but freeware engines still intrigue me - I want to do a project using one of them (possibly Ogre 3D or something along those lines) creating just a basic game, offering nothing new to the FPS genre or gameplay in general.
As much as you hate and despise this program, it isn't going anywhere. True, thousands of people will possibly download this, make a box and then release it as "Journey through Madness Part One: My Boxed in Mind", but that isn't the point. Most of them will find the process enjoyable and divulge deeper into the hobby while others will yell "WHAT IS A LIGHT" and uninstall the program.

Because the community today is honestly nothing at all like that. We all f**king wear top hats and s**t diamonds.

"Because no n00b is a good n00b."
Take that for irony, someone had this as their signature in the forums!
"Physics: 10/10 - Better than most commercial games, but sometimes too good! Simply the best game engine ever created!" ? A genuine opinion by Chris B (FPSC User)"
Of course! Crappy games with junk engines such as battlefield 2 and Half-life 2 can never beat a 5 minute kill-box!
