I was trying to avoid a paper and as desperate as I was I opened up Minesweeper to distract me. Now I'm curious how many Pitters play Minesweeper. I'm willing to bet most of us are Solitaire guys... or perhaps even Freecell people, but there have to be at least a few people who enjoy a good game of Minesweeper.

So how many of you play, and what are your best times?

Here are mine:
Beginner: 7
Intermediate: 45
Expert: 141

I used to think my times were pretty good, until I looked 'Minesweeper' up on the wiki page and found out how wrong I was...

? quote:
On the Windows version, for Expert, a time under 85 seconds in Windows 2000 (and under 80 seconds in Windows 3.1) is considered to be very good. The official record for Intermediate is 10 seconds and 1 second for the 8X8 Beginner board. The official record for Expert is 39 seconds. (Note that the timer instantly goes to 1 on the first click, rather than after a second.) Many people publish screenshots or video recordings of their best performances. The Minesweeper Community has compiled a bestever-list which includes videos of the fastest games ever played. In order to get on that list your records on beginner, intermediate and expert must sum up to no more than 99 (sub100).

I play minesweeper like twice a year or so. I can't tell about my best times; there are none recorded yet.
I play solitaire or spider solitaire as well; but Planarity is like my fav.

Under 99 for expert is not natural, thats pure fluke- you can't possible do it in under 100 unless its an amazing set whereby all the mines are on the outside edge!

I used to play. I got 5 seconds on Beginner and that was my greatest achievement.

i've had two scores of under 100 on expert, both high 90's. that was a long, long time ago, at work, using win3.1

what actually showed in the high scores list was something silly, like 27, but that's because i found the little txt file that the scores were written to..

I played it like a total of three times. It's just not that interesting to me. I also can't relate to those who can play Solitaire all day. I don't think I played Solitaire more than ten rounds in my entire life.

I like to shoot things, and have others shoot at me. I can't get into these puzzle games. Playing Riven, for example, felt like having a root canal without anesthesia.

I don't tend to like the more trivial games like Minesweeper or Solitaire, but I do enjoy adventure games with puzzles, such as Monkey Island or Broken Sword. One puzzle game I adore that is probably more belonging to the trivial set is Lumines, which is so fiendishly addictive and challenging that I really do find it hard to put down. While not a game for all occasions, it is one of those games that comes together so perfectly, with account to its purpose and platform in particular (a puzzle game for a handheld console (PSP) - a la tetris) that its hard not to be impressed. While I would never listen to the music from the game on its own, it works so well with the gameplay that almost everybody would love it. Undoubtadly Lumines is one of the best games of the year for me, despite the fact I generally dislike puzzle games.

I played minesweeper a bit a long time ago, but we used to play Pinball much more. I got 16 million and as far as I can remember, my brother never beat me to that... <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

I don't play Minesweeper I usually play Pinball. On Maxis "Space Cadet" I once got up to 12 million and on Digital Extremes "Rock Fanstasy" I can easily get over a billion points (but you can bangback on that table so that doesn't really count).

I cant imagine how it is possible to complete a game of minesweeper within one second. I dont play it often, but when I do, I dont play for speed.

The 1 second beginner time is when the game randomly lays the mines so that when you click once, the game is won.

its rare enough for it to lay so that is possible though and even more rare for you to click in the right spot

Yeah -- the wiki stats gave it something like... 0.00125% for a corner click.
