This may sound incredible to most of you, but I have never downloaded a single song from the internet before. I just don't listen to music on my computer. I have a stereo system for that purpose.

However, I got a iTunes gift card for Christmas worth US$30. So I have to download these songs (otherwise the card goes to waste).

When I went to the iTunes site, I couldn't download any music unless I download the iTunes player first. I know it's free, but I already have WMP. Do I have to download iTunes before I can download music from them? I couldn't figure out a way.

Thanks. And perhaps I'll actually be listening to music on my computer from now on.

I'd wager you have to download iTunes to be able to download the music. Perhaps someone else knows for certain.

Are the songs downloaded via iTunes playable outside of iTunes? What format are they?

Yes you do have to download the iTunes player to be able to download tracks.
And there are restrictions on how many pc's, cd's & iPod's you can use the tracks on (Last I heard it was You can burn a playlist up to 7 times, use the tracks on up to 5 computers, and an unlimited number of iPods, but that may have changed/be different in other countries)

You can never play the tracks on WMP afaik... Sux eh? Although... a new site has opened up on the net where you can sell and trade gift vouchers- you lose around 5-10% of its value, but if you'd rather have the money to buy a CD or such, you could do that.

Don't know the name of the site though.

Another ipod scam...
I got one for Christmas but *cough* I already have 1000 songs on my PC so I just click add to itunes list and then the ipod updates manually.
