After the latest Steam update, I played CS:S for the first time.

After I typed "map <mapname>" in the console, the computer starts loading the map. However, when the process is complete, I get the message "STEAM validation rejected" and I get kicked back to the console.

So the only way that I can play on my own server is by "Create Server". The old way of popping up the console and typing the name of the map doesn't work anymore.

Anyone else having this problem?

If youre only planning on playing with bots, try typing in sv_lan 1 before running the map.

Hmm ... I can run my maps by using the console just fine.

Sounds like your CS:S hasn't updated sucessfully- the validation process hasn't been done?

With the last update, Steam warned that my graphic card driver needs to be updated. I refused to update, however, and elected to ignore the warning (click "proceed without updating" and "never show this message again"). I have a Radeon 9800 Pro, and the graphics look just fine in Source. I see no point upgrading.

Could that be the source of the problem then?

I always update my drivers - bug fixes, new/improved features and support, and possibly performance increases are well worth the normally reasonable download sizes on broadband. If it warned you that you should upgrade, I don't see why you wouldn't <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> I can't say it sounds like your problem would have anything to do with graphics card drivers, but worth a shot.

all of my desktop shortcuts to various mods/maps give my the same 'steam validation rejected' message. i need to load the first map with the 'create a server' option, but once the game is up and running i can use the console to change maps.

Well I have to be different to all of you and have a different error message mine says that the game isnt avalable at this time and to try later.

I think a reinstall would probably fix it but I carnt be arsed to do that as I hardly play any of the games anyway.

I had enough bad experience with new drivers that I stopped updating them.

Frequently in the past, I'll get the latest driver. But after I install it, then something goes wrong. And it'll take me a day or two to fix it.

The latest Steam update breaking Hammer is a perfect example why people should not update when everything is working well.

I do the exact opposite, Reno. Only if there are problems, I'll download new drivers.

The manufacturers websites always say only upgrade if your facing problems- game manufacturers say always get the latest drivers. In all honesty I agree more with the game peeps, I hardly think the hardware manufacturers are going to release many (or any) patches that seriously screw up your PC unless they are a specialist upgrade.
And Reno is right, newer drivers can lead to performance upgrades, take DVD drives for instance. Laptop DVD drives you can sometimes download new software to enable them to write dual layer, or read quicker. With graphics, I recently updated my laptop chipset software, and windows now loads quicker.

If it messes up, just load up windows in safe mode and reinstal the last driver- I think your several days is a huge exaggeration, or the fact that you don't archive your drivers onto a folder or CD (which should always be done).

here's one: Instead of typing map <mapname>, type changelevel <mapname>.

That's a better command, because typing map kicks all players off the server before changing the level, whereas changelevel does not.

Thanks, I'll try that tonight (when I get back home).

Getting updates is like medicine. Why take some medication when it's not necessary? One can only suffer the side effects from those.

You can say they're like vitamins or supplements, but I don't believe in those things anyway. If I feel fine, I don't want to interfere with a nice status quo.

I don't think the medicine analogy is a fair one at all as it suggests the only purpose of updates is to fix problems, which isn't true at all. The comparison with supplements is fairer but still not quite there - those things are designed to improve a persons health, which could perhaps be compared to stability and performance of a PC, but doesn't begin to cover the likes of added support, documentation, and features.

I downloaded the latest Catalyst driver, but I am still too afraid to install it.

I'll need to think about it more.

I'll gather up enough courage tomorrow morning to install it. I am working a thirty-hour shift today.
