My wife got me F.E.A.R. for Christmas, but I just found out that I can't install it.

When I popped CD#1 into my DVD drive, the autorun runs just fine. But when I click on "Install", the computer pauses for a long time (like thirty seconds), and then pops up this error message "d:setup not found".

When I opened the drive from Explorer and ran "setup" from there, it gave me some "Only part of a ReadMemory or WriteMemory is read" message, and the the installation aborts.

I looked around at the VUGame site, but they didn't offer much help.

I never thought there could be something that's more annoying than Steam, but I guess I was wrong. The SecureROM technology is a major bitch too.

Yeah, there was another game where a whole shipment of them had nothing written on the second disk. That was no fun.

I was actually thinking about buying this the other day -- good thing I stayed away from it.

Tried all that, and nothing works.

Other CD/DVD works just fine in the DVD drive. In fact, I've never had any problem with the DVD drive before.

Nothing else is wrong. I play CS:S, HL2, and Far Cry without a hitch. It's just F.E.A.R.

Looks like gamers should really be afraid of this game--and it's not even because of the ambience.

installed just fine here, however that's the DVD version. If worse comes to worse, you can always copy the whole thing to your HDD and run it from there. (start with last cd first, and just copy everything over, select overwrite when prompted, it will append folders)

It isn't securom that's the problem, that doesn't even come into play until the game is installed.

Is there an ID number anywhere? If you have one of those I could tell you exactly what the problem is. But as it stands I don't know if FEAR is the problem or if there's a problem with your Windows Installer.

You could also check the event log in windows and see if there's a code there. Go to Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Event Viewer ... if you have XP Pro that is. Click on Application under the left window tree, and in the right window a list of all applications which give information when ran (this happens with installers, for example) Look for something like "Msi Installer" for the source. The type will most likely be an Error. Hopefully you wont find too many red circles with x's.

You can right click on it goto properties and it'll tell you what called it, for example:

Anyway, that is pretty much the only way you'll begin to solve the problem. Otherwise, there's no real way to know what happened, to be honest. ID numbers and codes are what you need to look up. Searching google for "fear" and "memory" brings up terror stories of programmers deallocating memory at the wrong times or something.

Man, I am really sorry you are having these issues Satch, but by no means would I let this one experience discourage anyone from buying this game. ALL software has its bugs and hitches, Satchmo just had the unfortunate luck of finding one. Halflife 2 had it's fair share of bugs, yet we would all recommend it to a friend.

I hope you get things worked out Satchmo <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

This is the conclusion of my midadventure with F.E.A.R.:

-----

While attempting to copy Disc 1, I encountered the error message "Cannot copy EULA: Cannot read from the source file or disk."

Therefore, I am returning the game for a full refund, as described in the refund return policy.

Try picking up another copy. If there's something wrong with the disc, it's worth trying to get a working version.

While you attempted to copy disk one? I don't think you can be too angry about a game not letting you copy it if that is what you meant.

Oh and sorry to be the bearer of potential bad news, but a lot of places these days, in the UK at least, don't allow returns on PC games that have been opened due to CD key theft <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

I think if you exchange it rather than get your money back it'd be allowable. Most places here are the same, however, if there's a manufacture defect then, they have to take it. Otherwise Vivendi will replace it or something as such.

It sounds like, now, that there's probably something physically wrong with the first disc. Try opening the EULA text file to check.

Also, for future reference, whenever you copy multiple cd games to one source on your HDD, you always start with the last disc and overwrite when copying. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> (After that point, if there's an MSI file you edit the media tab in it with ocra so it all reads from the same source, and bam, DVD version. This works also if you want to put many games on one DVD.)
