I can't resist to ask what r-speeds are exactly.
Is it like, it looks at the polygon amount and it shows you the frame drop it gives you? Or am I far off?

I know that silly. Old terms die hard but still, poor craftsmanship will lead to lower frame rates. This much still holds true even if the term is no longer R_Speeds.
I have seem way to many poorly constructed maps make my vid card wince.

There aren't r-speeds in Source engine.
It's been a long time since people have relied on polygon counts to measure performance. (There is a resource manager in source, though, it's much more informative, which includes polygon count, as well as your budget for everything else)

Think of it this way. The more visible data to be rendered, the harder it is for the engine to draw. The HL1 engine was designed to draw 1000 or less. YES, many mappers tried to exceed that limit but never could they do so. Anywho, the lower the r's, the more fluid the map would be drawn/rendered. The idea was to put as much into any given map as humanly possible but do so in such a way as you could not see it from any given locale.
Truly gifted mappers could put an amazing amount of detail into their maps and stay well below 1000.

So basically, r_speeds = the fps drop by polygons?
And indeed, I still find that hard, my map usually has pretty much of them, but once I got more experienced in mapping the amount of visible polygons was reduced as well without a lack of detail.

Portal works a little differently. They use some render pipeline tricks to get the images on the portals and such.
If you notice, there's only one or two areas being rendered at a time, so it's not too stressful.
What's a bit more impressive is the way the guy handles the portals. It's pretty seamless.

Unreal-pre-3 worked entirely different. (Unreal Engine 3 allows you to choose which model type you want, subtractive or addative. But there are many performance advantages of having a subtractive world.)

Actually, I was talking about the world itself, not the models therein.
Unless you used the unreal ED you might not know what I am talking about but in many of the maps, they looked huge but were actually quite small. They had a system of teleports that if you walked in a straight line, you could end up right where you were. But you never knew you had entered any portals. Its hard to explain. Anywho, many maps that looked like they were 500 yards across, were just teleports you could see through. Yeah, you could walk the whole way but it wasn't really huge.
I know I am explaining this all wrong but believe me, most maps weren't huge.

Haha my GF was in the room when this was playing it it piqued her interest (shes a sap for Titanic).
It was this movie that lost John Laseter his job at Disney. Good thing too, because he went off to create Pixar.. now hes chief creative engineer at Disney.

Haha she must've been confused
Why did he lost his job due to this movie? It was a good film in my opinion.
But now he's back again at Disney?

I shouldn't say that the film lost him the job. The pitch of the film lost him his job at Disney. The film went on without him.
He then joined Lucasfilm, to start the computer graphics department as an "Interface Engineer". It went on a bit, and a few artifacts came out of it, like Industrial Light And Magic (George Lucas's special effects department), film editing machines, etc. After a while George Lucas decided that it was time for them to spin John's department off to another company and find an investor. Enter Steve Jobs (apple), who financed the whole thing. They produced Toy Story (which I think to this day is a technical feat in itself).
Several movies later Pixar was bought by Disney, Steve Jobs got a board position at Disney, and they appointed John as Chief Creative Officer, as in John gets to design all of Disney theme parks, and green light new films with Roy Disney's approval.
If you're interested theres a great film called "The Pixar Story." Its about pixar, and even American animation in general:

I just got though annotating some text on ethics from the 80s. I needed this.

Ya, that Good Old Gaming site has some really great deals. It's a nice comeback for old games and a possible alternative to Steam pricing.
