I'm going to do Gameflood's contest, anyone else?

Also change the texture of the dock. Docks are rarely tile. -Facepunch

I'm gonna get my ass in gear on Soylent and try to get it done in time to enter, it'll be my first released map :P

? quoting http://www.gameflood.com/ContestRules
Contestants who are under the age of 18 may participate through the entrance of a parent or legal guardian.

I can think of at least a few people at this site who should definitely enter.

hell no...

Don't ask me why I post so much disturbing s**t lately, but the blogs I read have fun doing some kind of unplanned horror week. It's like in "The Ring": If I post it somewhere else I feel better but a hundred other people have to watch it <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

Check out the full list, too!

During the WWDC07, Id gave a first glimpse of their new engine (which will have a full ... or some sort of unveiling at E3 next month). Click on the link and scroll down to the 10:12 AM area.

Apparently, each map has about 20GB worth of unique textures that can be altered significantly by artists with very low performance hits. I would assume these "20GB" are significantly compressed, but as a first glimpse the world looks fairly impressive from a detail standpoint.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Err, those "20 GB" textures look really blurry from the screenshots.

That's due at least in part to the fact that those aren't screenshots, they're photos of a projector screen, not exactly the crispest media.

Good find Crono

From what little we have to go on, here's what I saw:
  • First shot: Looks like motion blur or a similar effect, a lot like many other current and next gen engines.
  • Second: The large balloons in the distance appear to have sunlight illuminating the back side through the material. Either that or it's just textured like that, the balloon and banners in the foreground don't seem to have this effect. The distance fog looks good. It looks like there could be self shadowing on the buggy, hard to tell though.
  • Third: The hand rail is casting a shadow on the dude's legs, and the dude looks like he's standing in mid air above the platform, I assume as the result of using a canned animation meant for flat ground on an incline. You can notice some edge aliasing on the banner on the left. More good-looking distance fog.
  • Fourth: The character looks decent enough, the face is a little lifeless in terms of the texture, no sub surface scattering or the like a la Crysis that I can make out. Looks a lot like a face you might expect to see in a Doom 3 engine game. It doesn't look like there's any self shadowing in this shot.

Not a lot to go on, but it looks to be on par with a lot of new current gen engines.

Not that it would show more detail, but here's Tech 5: The Motion Picture

I learned (because I tried this in one of my weird impulses) that you can drag files onto the command prompt to bring up the path to them. This is a big help, because Valve keeps breaking the SDK and the GUIs people write for tools like vtex or bspzip are inop.
