If one were to make a model of the capitol building in DC for a MP map or even CSS, would it be shut down? Or the white house for that matter? Of course, it would be impossible to do it accurately inside since much of that is hidden from the public with good reason. I know on google maps they have much of the details blurred on those buildings as well.

I know its illegal to shoot a image of a president like some tried to do with Clinton's pic back some time ago, but if there were a white house map with paintings on the wall that might get a stray round, if it could be argued that its inciting violence against the commander in chief?

Just curious. I know I'll probably get an FBI or treasury file for just asking.

I don't think the FBI or the White House would ever find out about your map. And even if they did, I highly doubt they'd want to do something like arrest you.

I don't think it would cause you any trouble personally. There are so many map ideas that could be great yet seem a bit too close to the bone for some people (eg. a CSS school level, or even a plane based level such as 747 after the whole 9/11 thing or a subway map after the London bombings); I'd say that life is too short to spend worrying about how everybody is going to take your idea. Obviously in this case it's not the opinion of general other people that is worrying you, but I think the worst that could happen is you get told not to do it again. Since when is building a game environment illegal? Films such as X-Men 2 have violent scenes taking place in the white house, a game isn't really much different.

Those are very insightful points about Xmen and the like. I still have another month's work to clean up my current "Bluestone Keep" map (and that?s with a friend's help), and wasn't really thinking about doing this per se, just thinking out loud as to how much grief there would be. Besides, getting the layout and dimensions would be a pain, not to mention that dome would probably be beyond my skillset. And, honestly aside from the uniqueness of the building and similarity to the real thing, I don't know if it would be a fun map to play hl2mp.

Since I started mapping a few months ago, I see all sorts of places that would make a good map.

Remember that there was an official 747 map for CS. It, tbh, wasnt all that great, and I can see why they didnt transfer it to Source, but noone really came down on them for it.

I map real world locations all the time, in fact its the only mapping I do these days. Just dont forget that playability is important.

When movies or games cut places (like the twin towers from spider-man and Project Gothem) it isn't because the government is going to bring the law down on them, its because people and stores will boycot the game/movie.

Under the umbrella of free speech your safe to make any kind of fictonal stuff you want. If you really want to be safe just put a disclamer in your map text.

Though some things may get your name put on a list, thanks to the "patriot act"

To my knowledge (glares at giggles from back row) there are no infringements in recreating a real world building UNLESS you are using the blueprints to base it from. I doubt that you could ever capture a realistic percentage of the Capitol building by just using your memory or even photos for that matter. Speaking of which, capturing photos would be an infringement if there were one on making a map of it.

Go for it.

That sounds about right, unless the blueprints are on public display, (even if "public" is in some dark room far away) which most buildings are, then I think it would be ok.

I'm not even sure if that rule applies to public buildings... if anything, it would be a copyright infringement, and I doubt the plans for the capitol building are still copyrighted, if they ever were.

But to transfer the blueprints into Hammer is essentially copying them... this is just the only way I can think that this would be illegal, unless theres a specific law about it.

Whats not part of National security, is a matter of public record. As far as copy right laws.. unless he was to make the blue prints from a copy and then try and sell them he is not breaking any laws.. So go for it.. just ignore the guys in black suits, with dark sunglasses, talking into their wrist.. they are with the cable company I swear.

Actaully, I have already got a 3d interactive map of the White House. I can send it to you if you wish. I bet it'd help you immensely. I got it on CD-ROM when CD-ROMs were "new technology" but it still works. just let me know.

I just had a thought. I'd think that building a map in hammer based off blueprints wouldn't be much diffrent from building a scale model made from wood based off blueprints. When I think of it that way it seems silly that it would be illegal in anyway.

Yeah, they wouldn't care about copyright or anything like that. It would be for security purposes if anything, imo.
