I was wondering what the majority of Snarkpitians prefered for their anime pleasure:

I know I know, you don't like my polls. [I know because some admin gave me a post limitation for the past year that has yet yet to be lifted]

This should be an interesting outcome, to see were your true passion lies.

I turned on the TV one day and before the picture started up (it's an oldtv) I could hear something like:

"I will take 300 life points fromme and give them to galatacdor allowing him 300 life points and a bonus of super aim power"

Or something really odd like that, my first impression was "Alright, a comedy show making fun of anime", nope turns out it was actually the real thing.

Voted #2. Second choise is fansubed. As long as it is somewhat understandable I'm fine. Dubbed anime never sounds the same.

I really couldn't care less now. If you asked me about 7 years ago I would have said "subbed" hands down, since English dubbing was TERRIBLE. But it's gotten MUCH better since then. It's not annoying now, at least bearable (in most cases). But, if there's something heavy going on I really can't watch it subbed since I'll miss something.

As for fan subs: that's great if there's no pro version, but honestly, I don't know who writes the subs for some of these things. It's very annoying to read a sentence which makes absolutely no sense. Also, fansubbers seem to be afraid to deviate from the literal translation ... as long as it gets the meaning across.

Things do tend to happen slowly around here. Sadly its usually after a rapid series of unfortunate events.

Someone got it in there head that I was an asshole ages ago. It has yet to be confirmed, but the rumor still circulates.

Go figure.

I used to love anime, but now the style is overused and boring. And with shows like erm Dragonball Z, i'd rather watch a still photo of a horse pissing into a bucket.

Pretty much all the anime I watch is fansubbed, and I normally find it quite satisfactory. I've only actually watched a few dubbed anime, and the split has been kinda mid-way between acceptable and s**te, but in general I would avoid it. Professional subs are normally the best, but I voted fansubbed just because it makes up about 80% of my anime watching.

Oh and watch "Paranoia Agent" people - great anime show with no token action scenes, silly effects, poor attempts at humour, or daft characters. Just an intriguing scenario and captivating viewing. Except episode 5. What the hell was with episode 5...

I dislike anime. Just out of curiosity, would the anime fan(s) here apply the same rules to any other foreign-language films?

I sure would. I can't STAND dubbed movies. Are there really that many illiterates out there?
Not to mention that seeing an undubbed movie in, let say, english with subtitles helps you learn the language.

Subbed all the way - almost every film I've seen dubbed has been ruined by it.

While I can see why people might not enjoy anime, I think many others are misinformed about it or judging it too harshly. It's not all flashy effects, silly storylines, or cutesy monster...just most of it <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif"> There is a lot more to anime than the famous surface series demonstrate - Dragonball Z and Pokemon aren't adequete examples of the whole lot thank god!

As I said, give Paranoia Agent a shot if you want to see a different side of anime, with a thoughful and interesting storyline and plenty of unexpected twists and turns. While a lot of anime presents its story in a convoluted and confusing manner, Paranoia Agent seems to keep it more straightforward without patronising or sacrificing depth. A fansub group called Ani-Kraze do a decent fansub of it if you are interested.

I didn't mention Dragonball Z for no good reason since most people I know seem to love it. Also the show seems to be gaining a lot of popularity lately as it's being broadcasted on a fairly large number of (foreign) channels.

I agree with ReNo, there are so much more than Pokemon and Sailor Moon out there. Ghost in the Shell is another more serious series/movie. My personal favorite is Cowboy Bebop.

Naturo has become worthless, btw. Hate that they keep on releasing crappy fillers. They should stop releasing until they've decent material instead of raping all the caracters with worthless plots.

You who say you hate/dislike anime, which series have you seen?

I have to agree that there is a large populace of people that don't watch anime because of all the hype about kiddy anime. They mostly bieve that they're a bunch of kids show not worth the atention of an adult. The comercials for good anime only come on lae at night with the very anime. When the people see the comercials, it's m ostly the flood of goody goody childs anime. In fact, that might a lso be the problem with dubing companies too. They recieve the film, believe that all anime is for kids, and try to get rid of any scene with blood or extreme violence. Many good animes have been ruined in the dubbing process because of this so called "Kidifying".

Most people just don't understand that there is a mature side to anime. One with intricate plots, sub-plots, and super-sub-plots, blood, and extreme violence that child would never be able to understand.

I don't watch anime, but when watching foreign films, I'd much rather read subtitles and be able to hear the original language and emotional strain in their voices than to have to put up with dubbing. Sure, having to read every line sometimes distracts from good shots, but I can't stand the thought of losing all the original voices.

Orph, I like how a month ago you were saying how much you liked Steamboy now you're bashing the entire "genre". :P

Anime, perhaps is mistaken as something more than Japanese Animation ... because that's all it is. It just tends to be treated as actual entertainment more than American animation, which, generally, is for younger audiences (By the companies who produce it, I mean). I can understand someone not liking it, but be aware of what it encompasses. It isn't just the s**tty shows that are flooding Am-TV now.
It's really only been recently that American studios have gotten it through their heads that animation is just another medium and not age specific.

Anyway. Subbed for foreign movies ...
