My satellite system has DVR capabilities. To tell the truth, I dunno how I ever got along without it.

My question is a continuation of last weeks debate.

My system has the ability (so I am informed by the Dish Network) Of connecting my receiver to my PC and recording everything onto blank DVD's.

I have yet to test this since I have no HBO or Movie channels to warrant it.

The question is: Is it wrong to permenantize a movie from a DVR?

If so, why? If not, why?

This a real question and not to be confused with an argument about copy rights.

Since no one seems inclined to begin, or commit themselves to a "side" I guess I'll begin.

Putting my views about copyrights aside for the moment, I do not think that transferring a movie from a DVR onto a DVD is wrong. In the first place, the DVR already has it on a hard drive, stored so its been copied already.

Secondly, since DVR's are an accepted method of storing T.V. then transferring its content onto a DVD cannot be but a continuation of that process.

I do however feel that if someone were to sell the content in any way then that would most definitely render the idea moot.

Since a DVR is an accepted method of storing content and the movie people have authorized their features to be shown to customers owning a DVR then they have also given permission to retain a copy of the movie.

I cant see how its any different from recording something from broadcast onto VHS.

As it's only an opinion, hypothetical thread I think recording a move off of TV is BAD! Not for the sake of it being piracy, but the fact you get adverts, tracking issues etc.

Plus the fact it's probably illegal ( I know TV shows, eg desperate housewives are up in the air the mo over legality ) would sign me off from this.

What I don't doubt is, I bet that there is some loophole that says that DVR's are illegal, or at least keeping their content is.

Its sad really. No good deed ever really goes unpunished. The copy right law has/had good intentions. Shame they broadened it to the point where its a bad thing.

From what I know about copyright laws in this area, it is all clean and fine as long as you dont share or sell your DVD's.

Just look at the FBI warning infront of movies, it says nothing about personal copies, only selling copies.

You can rent movies, copy them, and as long as you keep it there is nothing you'er doing wrong.

Digital Video Recorder.

It's a small one use computer that Dish companies are selling (as well as some Digital Cable companies) which allows you to record tv ... that's really all it does.

The price depends on the service you get, however. You could make one for as cheap as a crap computer and a TV card (~$52 USD)

The problem with DVRs supplied by companies is A) The hardware its self costs money per month and B) The service of connecting to the servers costs money (This is what Tivo does, for example)

If you simply wanted something that records TV at a whim and can be programmed for time, there's a free site called titantv.com.

The only problem is software support that doesn't blow is hard to find for general computers. I personally use Dscaler for my TV, but it doesn't record TV, there's programs like DigitalVCR and stuff which, I think, uses the file format that is supplied from many sites (such as the one I mentioned)

Depends on how much personal time you're willing to put in if you wish to counter balance money (Once everything is set up, you own it clean and clear, unlike DVR supplied by companies)

Oh well. It IS handy. The nice thing about having it in a personal computer of some sort is you can always put in more space. Like 500GB of space.

I did the pilot for that show. All the actresses were very nice people. Good crew to work on.

As a valued customer, my DVR came free with the setup.

I couldn't live without it. Pausing a movie or TV show for up to 2 hours is awesome.

My DVR has USB connectors and is supposed to talk easily with any PC that has one. So far I have not found time to test it.
