I don't know much about compression, and it is a rather complex area to look into to be honest, but the basic concepts are fairly simple. One aspect is to reduce data chunks to pattern and length, to avoid redundant repetition. For example, if you had the data 00000000000000000111001100000000000011111, then rather than store all that you could just store 17x0, 3x1, 2x0, 2x1, 12x0, 5x1. Obviously that would also have to be reduced to binary which bumps up the length, but it's still potentially a huge amount of saving. The patterns don't just have to be blocks of the same value either; you could have 0011001100110011 and reduce it to simply 4X0011.

Wikipedia is very good for mathematical topics. It seems that the two values are unrelated.

Why is having sex with lots of different people considered "cool?"
it's only considered cool if you're a guy. if you're a girl you're considered to be a slut.
has to do with the don juan attitude and status, or if you want to go back to genes: to the ability to spread your genes as much as possible

I think some people are that way because thier inner insecurities make them think that they have to act like everyone else is inferior. This is why (except for the most rare of cases) the "popular" and "cool" kids are complete and utter a-holes. You wonder "why on earth do people like this guy so much?" ever think that?
Fact is, when the ones that other people aspire to be like act this way, it becomes the way that people aspire to be. The first high school i went to was like a huge popularity contest in which everyone was trying to be "cool" by putting down everyone else. It was a festering stinking mass of insecurity and animosity. Almost nobody was happy. When you're not happy, you're an a-hole.
For any of you that have read "The Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan, being an a-hole is like Mashadar, the evil that spread through Shadar Logoth (Aridhol). Once one person starts, it just spreads and eventually everyone finds themselves hopelessly alienated.
