pfftt..."tagging", in my day, meant "knockin' a sob's nose thru his eye...

my one real run in with the law....san diego county in the late 70's, i was on ships liberty for 2 weeks between cruses...we were gonna pull out to go reload stores, ammo, weapons etc....

my wife, three buddies off the boat, and eir ladies were gonna go out on the town that night, everyone dressed to kill but me,i was late getting home, they are all drinking cuervo, offered me a couple quick ones when i walked in the door.......s**t...i forgot to pick up cigs...so, i take my barefoot, cutoff jean, no shirt wearin ass to the 7-11, 2 1/2 blocks down from the apt...got my cigs; im late, the ole girl was getting bitchy, the guys are pissy cause im late, etc etc....

i jump in the car, my old 73 dodge dart, lol, peely squeal out of the parking lot towards the apt. ......friggin cop coming the other way....i headed towards the parking lot of the apt, he'd turned around, lights and siren running, i pullled in the parking lot, settled the car, got out, and this asshole busts me for: dui, willfull reckless, and flight to avoid prosecution....off to county jail....my wife is standing in the back bedroom window watching this whole thing....sob wouldnt even let me go in and put shoes on....i didnt resist at all, but there it was....quite embarrasing.....san diego county jail, truly sucked...i sat there in my shorts in a bay....and i was pretty.....grrrr.....took 3 days, it was the weekend, and she came and bailed me out, which was hell for her.....

they dropped all the charges but the dui....700 bucks and probation 3 years, 1st offense (and only)....now, the navy was not happy with me.....

the boat pulled out on monday, i missed ships movement, on top of my ships duty day, and they nailed me at captains mast for UA (awol) , and missing ships movement....250 bucks for 2 months, cost me a stripe, and 45 days restriction to the boat....which wasnt so bad after i got to the boat, we were at sea.....

the ole lady still reminds me of that one on occasion... do not drink and drive....especially half naked....

I think Kris got it all sorted out, still had to pay the ticket but lucky for him the judge saw that the system had messed up and let him off easy.

dr.B that is a sucky turn of events.

I must be strange I guess. Other than normal traffic tickets and I think those are preordained, I have never ever had any confrontations/ordeals with the law.

Most likely due to my being associated with them in the Army at such a young age. I was 18 when I joined BTW.

I never thought of it before now. Its never actually come up before this thread. I have truly been law abiding.

Yeah, well. Doing illegal actions and running astray of the law are not universally interchangeable. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

Lemme rephrase. I have never had to go to court for any reason.

*whispers*

Besides, no one has of yet convinced me that piracy is anything more than a reverse con game preformed by those with the money to complain about it legally. It going to take quite a bit more to convince me that I am doing anything wrong.

Oh come on Orph; whether you care or not, surely you can see that you are taking somebody else's hard work for free when you pirate things? Do people not deserve to be paid for what they have made? Whether it is a computer program, game, movie, music CD, or whatever, you kidding yourself if you don't think you are doing anything wrong by simply taking their wares for nothing. Whether or not their goods are worth what they charge is another matter.

This is exactly how I view it.

If... They got as concerned about my movie disk or game disk if i burned it in the yard, as they do if I copy it, then I'd believe they were concerned. Its my movie. Its my game. I can, and will do with it whatever my heart desires. I actually download nothing these days. I did download a bunch. Nothing worth a poot since I now have a DVD and have no interest in AVI's any longer. I can say, that I never downloaded anything that I wasn't willing to own, and more than likely have a DVD of it around here someplace.

Still. I never asked anyone to view things like I do, and I trust that you are not currently asking me to see things your way.

Or, am I under some misconception Master Duncan?

Nobody, and I mean nobody will ever tell me what I can do with my merchandise, once I have legitimately purchased it.

jon, i have the utmost respect for you man, you know that....but, i have to deliver my take on this, after all these years...lol

you buy the cd, you can make as many copies as you like....give em away as gifts, coasters, backups, whatever....you SELL any of em, after all MY hard work, im wanting my money. its not just "intellectual property", theres alot of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears, not to mention the debt to get it all done...thats MY work yer talking about....not yours.....my business that i put together that yer making money on.....not my family or kids....

now, if you were to ask me nicely about redistribution or something, we'd be able to reach an amicable solution.....but dont just blatently steal my s**t.....

ok....i have some back alley s**t myself...so to a point, im a hypocrite...pc proggys dont quite fit in the same class as music in my view....yes, alot of hard work and sacrifice, but the rest doesnt cross lines even remotely....but they deserve their props, and their cash....and basicly, the same respect

copy to yer hearts content bud....you bet.....just dont sell em... <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

///end rant....tnx for listening...

Well, I am not here to impress anyone but.

*places hand on heart and holds other up in traditional boyscout fashion*

"I swear I have never made a cent off of anything I have ever backed up or received via the net."

I personally do not care if that makes any difference at all in anyones viewpoint about this... diversion. But, I had, or needed to make that point clear. I have my scruples. As warped as they may be, they are not available for anyones scrutiny, or judgment.

/me bows deeply.

I h8 u.

JK. My views on Piracy are this: If you bought it, you own it and you can do what you want with it. If you did not buy it, you do NOT own it unless it was a gift. And NOT a gift from the KaZaA fairy!

This is just a question, but it's still something I never understood ... why are people, in general, so POed at the idea of copying something (whether you own it or not) ... yet ... no one is mad a second hand shops who, legally, make money off of the same products, which can potentially be recycled through their shop many times. This is also dis-regarding distribution, because, it seems people have a problem with the actual act of copying and no distribution, or at least, it seems people confuse the two ...

It's just something I never understood, especially in the view of a production studio or record label ... go after the people with no money? Is that their plan?

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

NOTE: This reply isn't directed at anyone specific. Its meant AND expected to be received in a general way.

*looks around entire crowd*

My only problem that I have ever had with the copy rights debate are those people who insinuate that you are committing a heinous act but fail on some level to note that they themselves have done it. I personally do NOT see any distinction between borrowing one song and borrowing a whole hard drive full. If you have ever... EVER listened to one MP3, you are using copy righted material.

If you have ever, even once, borrowed your best friends game, EVEN IF HE NO LONGER WANTS IT, then you are borrowing his game. The nature of the games distributing modem is unimportant. It could be on the original disk, it could be copied. The result is the same. You have a copy of a game that you never purchased from the creator.

Now, as I said.. I really do not care if you are pro, or con. I detest those who judge people who happen to be more guilty that they are as if somehow that makes them less guilty.

Reminds me of a confrontation that I had at work once with a co-worker. This girl/woman, a pretty young thing who was for the most part a very nice person. She had one flaw... She was shagging the boss. Now sex in general isn't a bad thing, but doing it between married folk is, if those parties just so happen to not be married to each OTHER.

Anyway, Ms. boss f**k and I were talking about religion and when she heard that I was agnostic she jumped, fairly leaped away from me and told me in a horror that "GOD WAS GOING TO STRIKE ME DEAD!!!"

I laughed so hard I was in tears. She was in shock for a bit until I said "And this from a woman who sleeps with her boss?"

The room got very quiet. You see, she was positive that she was being discrete and at the very least that " THATS REALLY NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS AND I'LL THANK YOU TO MIND YOU OWN"

Silly me. I pointed out her hypocrisy and I was the one wrong.

In the end people. Discuss the topic till doomsday, but don't you ever accuse me of wrong doing, unless you are 100% innocent on all counts!

when did the topic move from legal/illegal, to right/wrong?

You know, I actually had to read this many, many times. My eyes were not sending the proper signals because it kept coming out... badly.

Anyway. There seems to be no answer that will satisfy you Fishman. You have asked a similar question throughout your stay here and each time, the answer didn't seem to satisfy your intention.

Although, I do not agree that everything legal=good. nor do I agree that everything illegal=bad. I do believe that everything is either right or wrong and to assume that when someone accuses you of an illegal act is not the same as saying you have done wrong is just... Strange.

You may not view illigal=wrong but I do. and if someone accuses me of commiting an illegal act, you are also accusing me of commiting a wrong.

The only distinction is, how we each view right and wrong.

Sadly, those in power, seldom view right and wrong in anything approaching "Normalcy"

To answer your statement. It changed when I said it did. Thats the only answer I can give that doesn't accuse anyone unjustly.

I have this irresistible urge to steal something of yours Doc all of a sudden. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

I have been seriously thinking of buying an I-Pod. The reason is simple. Owning an I-Pod makes you one of the crowd that can use borrowed content without committing anything illegal.

It would be nice to listen to my audio books without this grey cloud of shame hovering over me.

BTW, I just BOUGHT a new audio book. Its a Heinlein classic "Have Spacesuit Will Travel"

*Taboo* *taboo* *taboo* *taboo**taboo* *taboo* *taboo* *taboo* *taboo* *taboo* *taboo* *taboo*, *taboo* *taboo* *taboo* *taboo*.
