Um ... Macromedia Flash ... pretty much it.
If you get the program there is an entire library of tutorials within the program. A plethora of knowledge just waiting to be tapped ... that and it's all hands on example learning.
That and you can always search google, but at least the tutorials in Flash will teach you the basics of everything.
You can buy it pretty much anywhere ... I'd suggest just buying flash, not any of the other stuff, like DreamWeaver, since you can do that 10 times as effeciently by hand.
Official Site
Trial Download for Flash 8 Pro
Purchase Flash 8 Pro
There are also some tutorials on that first link.
Anything else?

I find it semi-peculiar that someone who generally makes acceptable movie things has to post a question like this.
Is the preceding movies you posted so dissimilar?
(looks at board in general to forestall derogatory comments)
Its a serious inquiry. I am ignorant of the processes involved. I cannot download anything H_D posts so I was wondering if the other movies were not Flash films?

No, they were not.
They were video files, encoded with some codec, never checked which, probably divx 3.
But the "what makes flash animation" is pretty obvious, since you answer the question within the question ... it's "Flash Animation" ...
Oh well:

Flash Animations are pretty much cartoons whereas the Music Videos
Half-Dude has made in the past were video grabs from Doom 3 and Quake 4.

Honestly, that'd be a pain in the ass and I would never personally do it. I'd rather use something like HL2, take some images of that, then port that into flash. I'm not sure how some people do it, honestly.
There's no other program that I know of, sorry. It's because macromedia made flash up, so, it isn't like CAD or something. (Which has many free versions)
I wish the guys who make homestarrunner would do some tutorials, because that stuff is crazy good.
But, if you use your imagination with the tutorials in the program, I'm sure you can figure it out. Probably some morphing with keyframes for timing, that kind of thing.
Try the trail out and see if you like it or not. I believe it's a fully functional version, with a time limit (30 days or something like that).

Ah, there is Swish ... not free though : Costs $100 USD.
Isn't swish suppose to be a "simplified" flash suite?
That's still cheaper than Macromedia's $700 USD price tag.

I didn't know Swish cost money! I used it for a long time and never had to pay. Of course that was a long time ago, maybe it was a freeware back then... Swish is actually easier to use than Macromedia, but Macro. has so many more features. It's just not a GUI like Swish, it's more... texty.

If you want to stay legit, and are a student somewhere, you can usually get programs like this with a huge discount (sometimes 80-90% off the regular price). Depends on the company, but I think Macromedia is good with this. I got Flash 5 legit for about $100US (roughly) because I was at high school at the time.
